[K3] KFL3A-1.0K 1 kHz, 8-pole roofing filter : Purpose?

S Sacco
Ever since I started looking at the K3, I've been wondering about the
purpose of the 1 kHz roofing filter.

It's too narrow for SSB, and, for me at least, WAY too wide for CW.

What would it be used for?  RTTY?

I have the 2.8, 400 and 200 filters in my K3 as of now.  I'm
considering adding the 1.8, but will probably wait until I get some
experience with the 2.8 and DSP.

Thanks,

73,

The 1 kHz filter is a decent roofing filter for  general CW use.  It is wide
enough that you can hear someone off frequency  but narrow enough to attenuate
a big signal close by.

The 500Hz is  pretty narrow and you might not hear someone calling off
frequency.   Sometimes that is a good thing, as in very crowded contest conditions.

Well, if I'm searching and pouncing for multipliers in a contest I like to
tune down the band and hear what I'm coming up on before I get to it. 1 kHz
is about right for that. That way I can tune more quickly than if I have to
sit on a frequency long enough to see if someone's there -- someone I want
to work may be listening to someone I can't hear and I could skate right by
them if I went too fast. A wider filter makes this possible. Of course you
can use a 2.7 kHz roofing filter + DSP which is exactly what I plan to do,
being too cheap to buy the 1 kHz filter. If I were a more serious contester,
I'd get the 1 kHz filter. It could mean an extra multiplier or two now and
then.

It's useful as a roofing filter. The DSP is then used for selectivity. If
the band isn't too busy, all is well. There is less loss through the 1KHz
filter than some of the tighter roofing filters, so less amplification is
needed to counter balance the loss and therefore less noise. Might be handy
for searching a band that's just opening or looking for a the tell tale
'599', 'up', 'up' etc of a DXpedition.
