K3 Keyer

Ray Kiesel
Will the early versions of the K3 internal keyer have
"Bug" mode available (manual dah, generated dit)?

Many thanks.

Ray:

Not as far as I can tell.  My K3 does NOT.  You could, however,
SIMULATE the process, by connecting only the DIT side of your paddles
to the DIT (TIP) contact of the PADDLE plug, and the DAH contact of
the paddle to the TIP of the KEY plug.

This having been said... I've used a number of keyers which purported
to offer a 'bug' mode and none(!) have ever felt anywhere near
'right'... and I've used bugs for DECADES...

This is because a whole lot of the feel of a bug comes from the momentum
of the weight swinging back and forth. A 'bug mode' keyer is a pale
imitation.

John-

Please be careful with comments like this.  If Wayne seems them, they will
capture his imagination and there will indeed be a CW spell checker in the
next firmware release.

If this keeps up - the firmware will NEVER be done and you all will not
get your radios anytime soon.

I don't think it's the keyer's fault; the keyer is just responsible for
timing.  My keyer code emulates a bug mode; in regular iambic or bug
mode, a Bencher paddle is going to feel......well....like a Bencher
paddle :-)

Almost.

The K3, as has been mentioned has a digital mode encode/decode feature
that lets you operate digital modes without a computer. One of the
things that you can do is send CW with the paddle and have the K3
convert it into RTTY or PSK for you. I recently had my first RTTY QSO
since 1982 this way!

When you do this, what you send scrolls by on the K3's display. If your
spelling or CW spacing is not so good, you can see it!

Can you use an external keyer (or straight key if your sending is good
enough) to do this ?

Not yet, but it's on the list. You'll also be able to send/receive CW,
PSK, and FSK using a plain ASCII terminal emulator.
