K3 Knob

n4dsp
Lyle,
thanks for taking the time out with all the interesting answers to fb
questions. Many of the questions I had have pretty much been covered. One is
itching me. Is the K3 Main VFO Knob better than the K2's? :)

Thanks

john-n4dsp

I'm not a member of the 'design team', but having seen the radio and
touched the knob, I feel that I am competent to answer this question:

*YES!*

I think so, and also lots better than the FT-100 knob on a K2!

I like that call, John!

K3 Knobs and encoders

The K3's VFO A knob is custom machined from aluminum. It's much larger
than the K2's VFO knob, and includes a rubber ring and tuning dimple.

The K3 also has a VFO B knob. It's smaller than the VFO A knob and has
a plastic shell, but it is internally brass-weighted so it, too, will
spin. In fact the VFO B and VFO A encoders are identical units that can
be set up for 400, 200, or 100 counts per turn.

All of the other knobs on the radio are also custom designed to our
specifications. They are wider spaced than the K2's knobs by a good
stretch, which seems to have been the most-requested K3 feature over
the years  ;)

I'll ask for all of us who have K2's and want to at least sniff the wine
...
What is/are the cost/s and part #'s for the two K3 tunng knobs?

Since the K3's tuning knobs are differnet sizes, which is the "logical"
replacement for the K2's knob?

I was gonna call Yaesu Monday, BTW.

Wow! that is another first in the Ham Radio industry. It looks like
those are powerpole style DC connectors on the back. Very cool!
Great design choice.

Thanks.  Yes they not only look like powerpoles, they feel, smell and
act like 'em too!

I plug in my power-pole-fitted shack DC supply into my K3, and it runs
just fine :-)

I haven't tried putting a K3 VFO A knob on a K2. It's quite a bit
larger, which means it would overlap the LCD's bottom edge, and would
likely interfere with the knobs at the left.

The K3's VFO B knob is smaller than the K2's present VFO A knob.

Now, all that said, we should be able to design a "little
brother"-sized knob for the K2 that looks like the K3 knob.
Unfortunately I won't be able to get to that for awhile.
