I worked for a few hours during the NAQP RTTY contest this weekend and ran into a strange issue. On 15 and 20 I get full power out while running RTTY on the K3. On 40 and 80 I am limited to about 20 watts.
I am running versions 2.02/1.77 of the firmware. I normally run in 'Data A' mode but tried 'AFSK A' as well. SWR was similar for all bands as was the software (Writelog & MMTTY). I looked at every control and configuration that I could think of that might be different betwen the bands but couldn't find anything. It may well be that I have a setting wrong but I cannot find it. To try and isolate the issue I left everything the same except the band button, and still ran into the problem. On CW, the power out is consistent between all bands. Any help would be appreciated. If this is a known firmware issue let me know and I will load one of the betas. Thanks and 73, John, WA6L |

John there is an apparent bug in some firmware (I am using 2.15/1.84
which suffers from it) where you cannot increase the power level while transmitting in DATA A, could you have fallen foul of that? My K3 gives up to 100 Watts on 80/40 on DATA A with a RTTY tone input to the line socket - provided the power is adjusted while on receive... 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 ---------------- <SNIP> Any help would be appreciated. I got in NAQP RTTY late for an hour or so last night. Only used 20, 40 &
80M and the power was 100 watts out the whole time - at least when I looked at the wattmeter! I did watch the PA Temp, after I heard the fans speed up, which made it into the mid 40's C. The only problem was the AF Gain was controlling the Line Out to the PC - a problem with trying to record the contest with both RX and TX signals. Every time I'd change the AF Gain I had to adjust the Line In level on the PC! And with =PHONES turned off you can't record the TX side of the QSO. Kind of a PITA. Other than that the K3 using 500 Hz (both first IF crystal and second IF DSP) was a real treat! 73 Hank K8DD ----- Original Message ----- From: "WA6L" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Sunday, July 20, 2008 10:37 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3: Low power in RTTY > > I worked for a few hours during the NAQP RTTY contest this weekend and ran > into a strange issue. Small kits that I never got around to building! All are still in "kit"
form. See photos at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/n4hh. View "Slideshow" for large photos. SoftRock Lite for K3 IF - was going to build this special edition to play around with it as a panadapter for the K3 but procrastinated long enough for Larry's LP-Pan to be available. Unopened kit. $10 post paid CONUS. Rock-Mite for 20 Meters - more procrastination. Includes QST from April 2003 as well as additional instructions. There have most likely been updates to this kit so you might want to get recent information. Unopened kit. $25 post paid CONUS. Solar Controller - yep, procrastinated this one away too. Don Brown (KD5NDB) offered this some time ago and may still have it available or may have updated it. Another unopened kit! $15 post paid CONUS. If you are not in CONUS, we will figure something out. Have fun! Please respond off list. I noticed this also....but I found that is was an antenna issue...or more so a coax issue. I changed out some coax and the issue went away for the most part, but I notice that since I put in the last upgrade (2.02/1.77) things changed for AFSK. I have to drive the K3 quite a bit harder than I did before, and it would never make the 100 watts output. The best I could do was 80 watts before the Xmit ALC would go to 5 bars and just stop. Running 3 to 4 bars would only give me 80 watts and increasing it any more was fruitless. I was going to ask about this myself.... My line in was at 48 to 50 and it tops out at 60. I am running the Signalink USB and had to increase the drive from the device considerably. I wonder if something changed in the software which either I did not read about or is an artifact of doing something that affects something else. Lee K0WA 250 RTTY QSOs in about 3 hours. In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply. If you don't have any Common Sense - get some Common Sense and use it. If you can't find any Common Sense, ask for help from somebody who has some Common Sense. Is Common Sense divine? _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Thank you all for the suggestions. I still have the problem, but I have eliminated many of the variables. I tested by transmitting to a dummy load. I am measuring full power out on 20 meters and above, but only about 20 watts out (18 as measured on my wattmeter) on 30 meters and below. There is more to this than just RTTY. I get similar results on AM and SSB, once again transmitting into a dummy load. Only CW remains unaffected by the problem. I also installed the latest firmware (2.16) but that had no effect on the problem. It is beginning to sound to me like a maintenance/warranty issue and I will contact Elecraft directly. Thanks again, John, WA6L
