My K2, s/n 5601, is currently wired as a Kenwood, and
I'm using a Kenwood MC-60A desk mic. Looking at the MH2 vs Kenwood wiring on the K2, they appear (almost) identical except for pins 5 & 6. So, I'm thinking if I wanted to use the MH2 on the K2, I'd just need to whip up an adapter cable for the MH2. Essentially, run pins 1, 2, 3, 4, 7,& 8 on the K2 side straight thru to the MH2 side, leave pin 5 (func) on the MH2 side unconnected, leave pin 6 on the K2 side unconnected, and run pin 5 on the K2 side (5v) to pin 6 on the MH2 side (5v). That way the MH2 would see the same pinout as if the K2 were wired for an MH2 (except for func - not connected - which I don't care about). I'd mainly be doing this if I were going portable w/the K2 and didn't want to drag the MC-60A (desk mic) along. Similarly, I could create a slightly different adapter cable to use the MC-60A on my (newly-ordered) K3. Anyone see any problems w/this approach? Thanks. 72 de N8PVZ ---bernie gaffney ____________________________________________________________________________________Luggage? GPS? Comic books? Check out fitting gifts for grads at Yahoo! Bernie,
It may be even easier than that - if you do not use the MC-60 mic on a Kenwood transceiver, then you can re-wire the 8 pin mic plug - just move the wire currently connected to pin 5 to pin 6. If there was something already connected to pin 6, you will want to remove it (and you will lose the function of whatever it accomplished). Since the Kenwood mic does not want a resistor between 5 volts and pin 1 (AF), you must install that resistor in the MH2 mic plug rather than across the mic jack inside the K2. That action will dedicate the MH2 mic to YOUR K2, but that may be OK unless you try to sell the mic. With the advent of the K3, we should all be thinking about wiring whatever mic we intend to use for Elecraft gear to the Elecraft pinout - for K2s, just wire straight across the mic header, and if you are using a non-Elecraft mic, just wire the mic plug to match the Elecraft pinout. In the long run, I believe re-wiring the mic plug is the most sane solution - plus it will also work with the K3. 73, Don W3FPR 73, Don W3FPR Bernard Gaffney, N8PVZ/QRP wrote: > My K2, s/n 5601, is currently wired as a Kenwood, and > I'm using a Kenwood MC-60A desk mic. Don,
thanks for the reply. I may not have been clear in my original Post, but what I want to do is have the mics be interchangeable; i.e., be able to use either mic on either rig, not just on a specific rig. Sounds like that may not be possble, based on your reply? 72 de N8PVZ ---bernie --- Don Wilhelm <[hidden email]> wrote: > Bernie, > > It may be even easier than that - if you do not use > the MC-60 mic on a Kenwood transceiver, then you > can re-wire the 8 pin mic plug - just move the wire > currently connected to pin 5 to pin 6. Bernie,
In that case, build an adapter. 73, Don W3FPR Bernard Gaffney, N8PVZ/QRP wrote: > Don, > > thanks for the reply. Is it possible to use one of the Heil mike adapters? When I go offshore I
take my Heil headset in a pouch. I also have a Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood Heil adapters in the pouch. This way I can plug into any rig. If the K3 is wired as a Kenwood, can't you just use the Kenwood mike adapter? Or if your mike requires voltage on the mike, can you use one of the other Heil adapters? Naw, just modify the Kenwood and both mics to the World Wide Standard (er,
ah, the Elecraft standard). <g> Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 <snip> > I want the > mics be interchangeable; i.e., be able to use either > mic on either rig, not just on a specific rig. I think it would depend on the type of connector the
Heil adapter users to connect to the Heil mics (not sure what that is) and what the Heil adapter expects each pin on the mic to be;i.e., AF, up/dn, PTT, etc. Probably might not be a good match w/a non-Heil mic. But, maybe. 72 de N8PVZ ---bernie --- "N2TK, Tony" <[hidden email]> wrote: > Is it possible to use one of the Heil mike > adapters? When I go offshore I > take my Heil headset in a pouch.
