K3 Noise Reduction

Lee Trout
{Thought this thread was about NR, *not* NB}

I find the NR on the K3 poor.  My little Kenwood 480's NR is much superior
to the K3's NR.  It is my major complaint about the K3.  To my ear it makes
CW sound mushy and distorts SSB to the point it is unusable while not doing
much to the noise (to me -- these things are subjective).

I have read, and tried, the numerous recommendations about combinations of
NR settings, RX equalization settings, AGC SLP and AGC THR, etc.  The
effects have been minimal and the NR remains poor.

If the bands are noisy or have high QRN I use the TS-480 rather than the K3.

I know that others are satisfied with the NR; it is very strange how
subjective this subject is.

Re: K3 Noise Reduction

David Gilbert

I find the NR in the K3 not especially effective, and I almost never use
it.

And while I may be in the minority, I also couldn't care less.  I use
narrow bandwidths, AGC THR = 008, and AGC SLP = 000 for both CW and SSB,
and without ever using NR I can still pick out weak signals from the
noise better than with any other rig I've ever had, especially after the
recent AGC improvements that addressed the low level audio IMD issue.

If I had my choice, I'd reprogram the NR button as a register stack for
a few AGC settings ;)

I like the NR!  Lately I've been listening for openings on 10m CW through
the 2.7k SSB filter.  With the NR set at F1-1, the white noise is
significantly down and any signals (if/when they appear!) sing out.  It's so
good I can keep an ear on the band all day while working away without that
distracting band noise.

Caveat: I've never had a DSP rig before so can't compare it to other NR
systems.

I don't find it to be subjective.  But I do know the k3 is very sensitive
and using the settings mentioned in a prior email today, work for me too!
Give it a try.  Perhaps your agc settings might be the culprit.

Re: K3 Noise Reduction

John N1JM

I don't think I have ever had or used a radio where the NR was terrific. Consequently I hardly ever use NR. Even after all the agc adjustments, etc. with the K3, my TS480 is about the same. YMMV of course.
