K3 + P3 + Microkeyer

Sorry if this is redundant.

Now have the K3 + P3 + KPA500 all hooked together. But now that I have taken the RS-232 cable out of the back of the K3, were my microkeyer connected, and replaced it with the Cable going to the K3, how do I hook the Microkeyer RS232 to get Cat or band data back to my PC?

Plug the USB cable that is connected to the MicroHam Keyer into the PC. Be sure you have installed and run Router defining the necessary port numbers for all the features in the microKeyer you intend to use.

The big cable that you plugged into the back of the microKeyer with all the seperate leads you hooked up to the K3 - one of which is the serial interface (RS232). Now the communication between the PC and K3 is via the microKeyer. Works fine but for one task...FW updates.

Be sure to note in the manual about not trying to do any firmware updates in this configuration. You MUST plug the K3 directly into the PC for these updates. Believe me, as the manual says, it does NOT work with the microKeyer in the middle.

All information is pretty clear in the MicroHam manual.

Thanks Bob:

That combination worked perfectly. As soon as I did as you recommended
and changed the baud rate from Microham to the K3 that got everything
Working. I guess I will have to download the latest Router Manual from
Microkeyer.

If I remember correctly, microHAM specifically advises *against* connecting
like that and doing updates through the microHAM device. It would seem
prudent to disconnect your microHAM device and directly connect your P3/K3
combination and effect updates in that manner.

You have it right.

In normal use the microHAM unit is in-between the PC and the K3 or if
there is a P3 it is PC - P3 - K3. BUT when having to do FW update to
the P3 or K3 or screen capture off the P3 the PC needs to be connected
directly to the P3 or K3.

An RS-232 A/B switch can make that changeover easy - the common of the
A/B switch connects to the K3 (or P3) and one side connects to the
nicroHam while the other side connects directly to a serial port (or USB
to serial adapter). A simple "flip of the switch" changes it from
normal configuration to Firmware download mode.

I do it that way myself ... each K3 (+P3) has an RS-232 A/B switch on
it. The computer serial port has an A/B/C/D switch that connects to
each of the A/B switches, the programming cable for the XG3 and for
now the LP-100 (but normally my general purpose test port).
