K3/P3 combo during ARRL RTTY RU

James Hall-2
Hello All:

I wanted to give - or chime in with - my impressions of my K3 performance
with my new P3 panadapter. I run an SO2R setup with the K3 (with rebuilt
TL-922A amp) as the #1 rig and my venerable FT-1000MP MkV (with 87A amp) as
my #2 rig. The K3 is the only rig with a panadapter.

This was my first contest after a station rebuild project which lasted over
a year and a half. It felt great to get back in the saddle again and I
really love RTTY as a contest mode. I use N1MM Logger as my contest
software.

I found the use of the panadapter was quite useful when I switched roles for
the rig and used it for S&P. It was really neat to be able to spot RTTY
signals on a noisy 80M band and work them quickly. I have also found that in
a contest scenario, I have better luck turning off the dual peak filter and
just maintaining a narrow filter skirt around both mark and space. The
reason for this is that I can 'see the signal coming' when I tune for
stations much easier and can quickly 'lock on' and work them.

Now I wish I had a panadapter for the Mark V ! J

clear RIT upon tuning in K3?

Mark n2qt
Is there a way to zero the RIT control when tuning the main tuning knob?

During the rtty contest I would ride the RIT control while running and then
forget to
zero it when changing to S&P.

I've looked through the K3 manual and programmers reference along with
looking
through the N1MM manual (If there was a macro that would execute when
changing
from RUN to SP I could do it that way).

Yes. With N1MM you just add the macro {CLEARRIT} and it works fine with the
K3. Other radios, such as Icom, do not process a 'clear rit' command string.

Use {CLEARRIT} at the end of your Run-F3 macro, so the RIT is zeroed
after each QSO is logged. That will also leave you ready to go S&P.

RIT CLR can be done either from the front panel switch, an "RC;"
command, or an "SWT53;" switch emulation command, even while you're
transmitting.

Re: clear RIT upon tuning in K3?

Guy, K2AV
The N1MM {CLEARRIT} macro sends the correct K3 command if the rig is
declared as a K3.  My run F3 string in N1MM is ...

   "TU * {CLEARRIT}"

...  without the quotes and those are braces, not paretheses.

Re: clear RIT upon tuning in K3?

Mark n2qt
yes I've got that in my TU macro in N1MM, but it seems I manage to tune RIT
and then wander off
to S&P without logging someone just before.

WIth low power I seem to be giving up on running quite a bit!

Re: clear RIT upon tuning in K3?

Just put the {CLEARRIT} command in as many macros as you need.  I have
it in both S&P CQ [which switches N1MM to RUN mode], in my RUN QSL and
CQ, and in a couple of others where it probably doesn't matter.  Don't
need RIT in S&P of course, but it is a lifesaver on RTTY in RUN mode.

RTTY RU was a blast with the K3, even though I did the NAQP CW full time
and only got some time Sunday in the RU.
