K3 Parts transfer between rigs

Keith Heimbold
I embarked on a project to move parts from one K3 to another and I got the rigs back from my tech elmer tonight.  After getting the K3s home, I decided to follow the procedure to get them operating again.

I had my tech elmer transfer the KAT3, KRX3, KDVR3 and KBF3 from one of the K3 to the other.  I now have multiple errors and not sure what is going on. The first receiver works well and I loaded the filters fine. However, when I went to load the second receiver and run the synthesizer calibration I received multiple errors.

E020202 & E027979 - ERR DSE
E00005 ERR VCO
E000255 ERR VC4
ERR PL2

When I went to install the DSP2 using the utility program I received these errors.

DSP 2 verification error
Error code OXE20000046

I reviewed the manual and it says that I have a DSP Echo.  The VCO and VC4 error may suggest my friend installed the cables incorrectly.  Pretty bummed right now.  Any additional thoughts would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Keith

Re: K3 Parts transfer between rigs

Mike Reublin
Keith,

You can download the assembly manual for the K3 from
http://www.elecraft.com/K2_Manual_Download_Page.htm#K3 and open up the
rig and check for errors. It's tedious, but not difficult. Or take it
back to uncle Elmer and make him do it.

Re: K3 Parts transfer between rigs

Hi Keith,

This type of transplant takes more preparation then meets the eye. For example, the Sub RX also includes the addition of a KSYN3 board and an AUX DSP board. Forgetting to install either of those two boards could create some of errors you are seeing. Then there are other things to check and/or change on the existing K3 boards. Similarly, the donor K3 might have to have some things unchanged once this handful of parts has been removed.

If the Elmer didn't fire up the rigs after the swap then perhaps he was just supplying skilled labor and he was relying on you to do all of the research.

Was the DSP2 board and the synthesizer board for the KRX3 transferred
from the other K3.  From the errors you are getting, it would seem that
they were not.

Did your tech elmer just do the unplugging/replugging job or did he
check the result out after each option was transferred?  What did he say
when you asked him for his observations.

You may have to contact Elecraft support with your error codes.

Re: K3 Parts transfer between rigs

Keith Heimbold
I have sent my Elmer tech friend a couple emails asking him if he swapped out the other boards. If he did not, we will have to get that done and see if the errors are eradicated. This is a set back for sure but it gives me an opportunity to better understand the K3 and its component parts.

I will also contact tech support to see what is going on with the error codes. It appears that I also received a ERR DVR error code to top it off after I sent the email to the reflector.

Re: K3 Parts transfer between rigs

Hi Keith,

You should review the KRX3 assembly/installation manual. There's a resistor that may need to be modified (see page 21) and maybe some other stuff as well.

Thanks for pointing that out. I will confer with my friend to see if he missed some of these steps or not.  I am waiting to hear back from him.

I just received an email that the tech moved the DSP2 and SYN to 1526.

I will email and call tech support to find out what is up.
