Has anyone, who has possession of a K3, ordered and received a Pelican
case? I would like to ask what size you went with, and what style. I am in a quandary. K8AJ wants to buy me a Pelican case for my (our?) K3. So she came right out and asked me what model to buy, and I just don't know! She will not let the K3 ride in the back seat in a cardboard box. I'm not sure if I need room for a key/headphones,power supply etc in the Pelican case, as those can also easily be carried in a soft tool bag. Anyone been there yet? Tom,
Without answering the question directly: I took my K3 to Aruba for CQWW wrapped in bubble wrap inside a small shipping box, inside a regular suitcase. Steve, K6AW, took his to the Galapagos, also wrapped in bubble wrap, in a backpack as carry-on luggage. Both seemed to survive fine. This was a heck of a lot easier than taking an FT1000D down to Aruba! 73, Andy, ae6y ----- Original Message ----- From: "K8TB" <[hidden email]> To: "'Elecraft Reflector'" <[hidden email]> Sent: Wednesday, December 12, 2007 3:34 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Pelican case? > Has anyone, who has possession of a K3, ordered and received a Pelican > case? I took my K3 to Grenada for CQWW as carry on in a Zero-Halliburton case that I had picked up several years ago at a hamfest. It held the radio, a switching power supply, cables and more. It fit in the overhead compartment, as well as under the seat when necessary. The case is 14 1/2" x 16 1/2" x 9" outside dimensions. Coincidentally, I have another much smaller Z-H case for my KX1. But I found that the KX1 was so small that it was better off just bubble wrapped in regular suitcase or carryon camera case when I travelled overseas with it. _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hey Tom,
I bought this case: http://www.boss-safety.com/shop/medium-cases-1510-series-c-532_480_499_506.h tml?gclid=CO2Jy_G1pJACFQUsPAod7gO57w for my K2 with the thought of using it for my K3. I bought an extra set of foam inserts for that exact purpose. I bought the lid organizer in which I was able to put all kinds of support stuff (i.e. connectors, wire, soldering iron, meter etc.) and get my K2, W1, HexKey, SmartCharger, headphones etc. I'm pretty sure that it will house the K3 - but I may have to leave some of the other things out to get it all in there. I will let you know when I get my K3 (sometime after the first of the year). What's a "Pelican case"? Al N1AL _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. I use Pelican cases - just get whatever size you want as only you will know
what you will be taking along with your K3. Look in camera shops - sometimes they have special offers. My size criteria is limited by carry-on size dictated by airlines. <a href="http://peli.com/case_category.php?CaseSize=Large%20Case%&New=%">http://peli.com/case_category.php?CaseSize=Large%20Case%&New=% Simon Brown, HB9DRV ----- Original Message ----- From: "K8TB" <[hidden email]> > Has anyone, who has possession of a K3, ordered and received a Pelican > case? Hi All,
Pelican cases are excellent. But they can get pretty expensive, especially in the bigger sizes. If you have a Fry's Electronics store in your area, they usually have a fair selection. A less expensive, but I think effective solution, can often be found at places like Harbor Freight. They often have sales on some nice locking cases that are ideal for electronics stuff. They come with the foam pads inside that you can cut to fit. These are fully waterproof like Pelican cases, but they are very sturdy, and not a bad alternative. The trick is finding one that really suits you as to dimensions.
