I need to take my K3 to class. I'll need just enough oomph to talk to the serial
port. What would be the minimum rating for a PS? Any suggestions for a small packable one? Would a couple of layers of bubble wrap be sufficient for packing the rig in checked buggage? 73, Mike NF4L ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
My K3 with two receivers draws about 2 amps on receive. It drew a bit over 1 amp before I installed the second receiver. For transmit at 10 watts I would ad about 3 amps to that. Two layers of bubble wrap would not be enough for MY K3. I use a hard side fiber-glass brief case with enough padding to keep the K3 from sliding when I carry it in my truck cab. For checked baggage on an airline think pad for throwing 10 feet unless you mark is fragile. In that case, think 20 feet. Make every effort to avoid possible impact which will push the knobs toward the face of the transceiver. I would not like to test how much impact the tuning knobs on the encoders would stand.

A loaded K3 on receive should be under 1.5 A even with all guns
blazing. If it's 2 amps, try switching options off (starting with the sub RX) to see what's up. Another possibility is incorrect resistance at the current-sense resistor, so confirm the reading using an external ammeter. 73, Wayne N6KR On Dec 28, 2011, at 11:11 AM, WILLIS COOKE wrote: > My K3 with two receivers draws about 2 amps on receive. A friend had to pack his K3 for overseas shipment and went to a luggage maker and had them burn a semi ridged foam insert for his shipping container. This puts equal pressure on all surfaces. It arrived intact. Anything less is a gamble.

Back in the days I ran a custom woodworking shop, I used to pack fragile
display exhibit assemblies into crates that would be handled by fork lifts and other forms of rough handling used for international shipping. One learns quickly that the best packing method is to secure the corners only, if all surfaces have equal pressure and the exterior of the shipping container takes a shock in the middle of any face, that pressure will be transferred to the object to be "protected" (in other words, the object breaks). OTOH, if the object is supported only at the corners, no damage will be done as long as the corner blocks stay in place. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/28/2011 2:31 PM, Mel Farrer wrote: > A friend had to pack his K3 for overseas shipment and went to a luggage maker and had them burn a semi ridged foam insert for his shipping container. This is also very common for computer monitors, laptops etc. The corner

I like the corner idea. I think I'll check with Elecraft and see how assembled rigs are shipped, and if they'll sell the packing. 73, Mike NF4L On 12/28/2011 2:50 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: > Back in the days I ran a custom woodworking shop, I used to pack fragile > display exhibit assemblies into crates that would be handled by fork > lifts and other forms of rough handling used for international > shipping. Ron,
There are several software applications that work well with the K2. he important thing is for you to say what functions you expect from that software. If it is a logger application, I would suggest you start with N1MM, but if a rig control application (which can include a logger), then Ham Radio Deluxe is one to be considered which includes both rig control as well as a logger. If rig control is more important than logging, the I would highly recommend the N4PY software. Carl has done a great job of integrating the K2 functions into his software. There may be others, but those are the ones I am most familiar with. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/29/2011 6:53 PM, roncasa wrote: > hello, > > perhaps it's been discussed B4 but can anyone recommend software for use > with the K2? > Thank you > > 72 > Ron, wb1hga > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Yes, it has come up before. Based on advice from list members, I have used N1MM for contests and Winlog32 for everything else. I used those for three years with a K2. I am delighted with both. I am now using both with a K3. BTW, you'll be happier if you use the Winkey keyer (compatible with both Winlog32 and N1MM) than if you use the control software directly to perform CW keying of your K2. 72/3, Steve AA4AK On 12/29/2011 6:53 PM, roncasa wrote: > hello, > > perhaps it's been discussed B4 but can anyone recommend software for use > with the K2? > Thank you > > 72 > Ron, wb1hga > "why do croutons come in airtight packages? > Aren't they stale to begin with??" > ______________________________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:[hidden email] > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Understood. The point is that I ONLY want to talk to the RS-232 interface. No xmit or
recv is needed. I'll be in a Mac programming seminar at Big Nerd Ranch. Really. I have one of those RS supplies in the shack, powering 4 receivers that listen for railroad traffic and send it to an aggregator which supplies data to a program that graphically displays train info. So far, noise hasn't been a problem. Mike On 12/29/2011 8:56 PM, Jim Brown wrote: > On 12/29/2011 3:19 PM, Mike wrote: >> Looks like a Radio Shack 22-507 PS will meet my needs @ 3A.
