K3 Pre Release Manual

It's not a matter of ".... can't please all of the .."
regarding the LOW REZ almost FUZZY photos. In 2007
there is not need to take photos which are not clear,
almost whatever the rez is set to. My Canon A95
takes much clearer digital photos, at all
resolutions. In FINAL MANUAL - can someone retake
the photos, and get clear crisp ones?

200k or 300k photos, are normally MUCH clearer
than these.

If I have to build the K3, using identification
with some of these fuzzy photos - perhaps I'd
better buy the finished K3 instead of the
kit I ordered.

If the K3 Manual goes to 30meg, that is not
a problem for many of us. And the rest, can
buy a HIGH RESOLUTION PHOTOS version, from
Elecraft, or sign up for roadrunner cable.

If you're running AOL or Earthlink - you
shouldn't even be trying to read the
manual.

I hear you, Fred. And I personally would fall into the camp that would prefer
a 30MB manual with high-res photos. :-) But as a tech writer for a major
silicon valley semiconductor company, I know that PDF file size is always a
bone of contention. Short of offering two different versions of the manual
(and I don't know of anyone who has actually done that), I doubt there's any
way to meet everybody's expectations. Especially in the amateur market, there
are a lot of customers whose only practical Internet solution is still modem
dial-up, not necessarily because of the expense of broadband, but because
broadband simply isn't available short of satellite (very expensive by
comparison, and not all that broad anyway). Since the US is practically a
generation behind most other industrial countries in the universal deployment
of a true broadband infrastructure, and seems politically indisposed to pull
development of this vital national resource into the public sector where it
rightfully belongs, I don't expect this situation to change in the near
future.

Hopefully the actual kit will contain a PRINTED manual with normal
high resolution photos. This copy of the manual is a PRELIMINARY one,
and as has been pointed out, it is quite normal to reduce the
resolution of images in web documents so that the many people who
don't have unlimited broadband connections can download them without
tying up the phone for hours,

Fred,

The only reason that a low-resolution preliminary manual was posted is
because the file size of the high-res version is much larger. (The
Microsoft Word original is over 50 megabytes!)

We'll post a larger one anyway for those who don't mind the download
time.

Another idea for those that want to look at a higher resolution
photo would be to put a folder of them on the E web site.
Then people could download the whole thing, or just select
those pix they particularly wanted for a better look.

One only need to look at many of the software distribition models....for years
when I was dialup only I would download 100 meg plus applications...the authors
used utilities that split large application into chunks that could be
re-assembled.... my the downloader.

Back in the bad old days, one could split a large application into pieces that
would live on a floppy....I used to distribute software to my customers who had
only 360 kb drives.

Elecraft could also make use of many of the free(but one gets to ignore ad
content) file sharing services, so there would be no load on their servers.

If someone were to supply a high-def version of the manual, I can attempt to
split it into chunks and find a place where is can be downloaded.

I've split the Hi-Res manual into chunks and placed it for public download.
Before I announce the URL, I need a few folks to do a test download to insure
that I haven't painted myself in the corner or painted a bullseye on the back of
downloaders.

Send me an email if you want to test the concept and I'' send a help file.

Please do not do this. We are updating the manual on a rapid basis and
can not afford to have it propagate in older versions. Its also
copyrighted and we do not want copies placed on other sites.

I've only sent the link to two testers....so I'll take it down. I thought it
might be a help for folks stuck with dialup. Of course, you could offer the
split version yourelf...which would keep it in your control and accomodate
folks.
