NO, this is not what is going on. If the sidetone monitor is turned up to a good fairly loud position, you will not hear the thumping. IF it is turned to what I would call a comfortable level for my ears, then the thumping occurs.
It is not dependent on AF gain being set excessively high, but is rather dependent on the monitor setting is relation to the AF gain. What exactly kind, model of speaker are you using?

Toby,
You are correct. If I have the monitor set above about 35 there is no thumping. If I set it down to about 12, where it usually is, there is thumping. Tried it with the internal speaker, external Kenwood SP-850 and Heil headphones. 73, N2TK, Tony -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Toby Pennington Sent: Thursday, June 25, 2009 1:27 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] K3 QSK NO, this is not what is going on. Does turning off AGC have any effect on the thumping?

I also cannot duplicate this on #2603, I run the audio at 12 all the time,
if I set it at 9 or below I have almost no audio out. I use amplified speakers. Audio at 12, RF also about 12. The monitor at 50, no thumps. monitor at 12 no thumps, the background atmospheric noise is louder than the monitor at 12 and makes it sound perhaps strange between cw characters, but no thumps. Stock here also with no mods. Merv KH7C > I can't duplicate it here at any combination of settings. No, the AGC has no effect one way or the other.
So far it seems reducing the audio level below about 9 o'clock or reducing the RF gain below about 1 o'clock or increasing MON above about 35 significantly reduces the thumping on both K3's here. As I said earlier it is not a major issue, but would be nice to eliminate. The three conditions found so far to eliminate the thumping are not practical from an operating point of view. Maybe I don't have something set up properly? 73, N2TK, Tony -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Joe Planisky Sent: Thursday, June 25, 2009 3:29 PM To: Toby Pennington Cc: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 QSK Does turning off AGC have any effect on the thumping? 73 -- Joe KB8AP On Jun 25, 2009, at 10:27 AM, Toby Pennington wrote: > NO, this is not what is going on. The only audio mod made to both rigs deals with the cap change on the corner
of the main board. Also, you don't need to be transmitting. You can hear the thumping in the TEST mode. 73, N2TK, Tony -----Original Message----- From: Ron D'Eau Claire [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Thursday, June 25, 2009 3:30 PM To: 'N2TK'; 'Toby Pennington'; [hidden email] Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K3 QSK I can't duplicate it here at any combination of settings. I ran my K3 through your test and I have the thumps also. If I switch to Simi the thumps go away, but if I turn the delay down to 2, 1 , 0 the thuumps reappear. I do not have to turn my AF gain up very far to begin hearing the thumps. At my normal listining level they are quite noticable. It appears this problem may only exist in newer K3s. MY SN; 3121.
