My K3/10 does not seem to want to connect to my Mac Mini computer. I have disconnected and reconnected the cable from the radio to the computers USB port. When I try to use the K3 Utility it says "Error opening serial port". It won't connect to either the K3 Utility or MacLoggerDX. Any ideas?

Dave,
I really cannot help, but that message indicates that you have either a problem with the computer opening the serial port or the ability to connect to the K3. A review of your computer capabilities (baud rates, port assignments, etc. is in order. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/5/2012 10:07 PM, David Guernsey wrote: > My K3/10 does not seem to want to connect to my Mac Mini computer. Dave,
A few questions: Have you used that USB/Serial converter for other programs. Since you say it won't work with either the K3 Utility or MLDX I wonder if it has worked with anything else. What type of adaptor are you using (Prolific, FTDI, etc.)? Have you installed the appropriate driver? What version of OSX are you using on your mini? It worked yesterday. It is an old installation and has worked up until this afternoon. 73 de Dave KJ6CBS ________________________________ From: Jim Bennett <[hidden email]> To: Elecraft Reflector Reflector <[hidden email]> Sent: Sunday, August 5, 2012 7:15 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RS232 Connection Dave - did it ever work, or is this a new connection? Have only used it for K3 Utility and MacLoggerDX. Worked for both up until this pm. Using Keyspan USA-19H Serial to USB adapter. Driver is installed and worked before. The key is "Error opening serial port" - has it ever worked. Check the pull down box in the K3 utility and make sure you select the USB Serial port and not a Bluetooth or other serial. If that doesn't work, make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest driver for the USB to serial cable.

Dave,
Ok, that makes it even more interesting. Obviously you have taken a look at things you may have changed since the last time it worked. I think the first thing I would do is a re-boot. If that doesn't correct it take a look at "System Information" in the "About this Mac" menu (the drop down from the Apple logo in the upper left corner.) Does it show the adaptor under the USB menu? I have also had USB/Adaptors fail for no seemingly good reason. Did you get any nearby Lightning or such? Do you have another adaptor to try? First off though, I will be interested in what happens after you re-boot. When a driver gets hosed, there is sometimes a bad ring buffer pointer that doesn't get re-initialized by a reboot. Also worth checking all the cable connections etc. This does not sound like a K3 problem, but rather a problem with a driver, a cable or the serial adapter itself. Dave,
Is there any chance that you moved the serial adapter to another USB port, or that you plugged in other USB devices since this last worked? I've had this problem before and it was a result of my serial adapter getting assigned to a different device in the OS (such as, hypothetically /dev/tty1 instead of /dev/tty0). That usually results from plugging in to a different usb port. If this isn't your problem, then some of the other suggestions you received are spot on and well worth looking at. 73 & Aloha, Dave, AH6TD On Aug 5, 2012, at 4:07 PM, David Guernsey wrote: > My K3/10 does not seem to want to connect to my Mac Mini computer.
