K3 & Remote Rig Questions

Dennis Egan
I'm in the process of setting up a remote K3 Twin Station, and
am having a few minor problems.  I'm addressing this to the
Elecraft reflector as I think the problems are correctable thru
the K3 setup.

1. Is there a software command that will put the Control K3
into Terminal mode?  I know I can do it by pushing and holding
in the CONFIG key, and I've been over the Programmers Reference
but don't see either a software command or a <Long Hold> key #
that will do it.  I also don't see anything in the Firmware Update
Section on how to do this.

2. If my Control K3 is in Terminal mode, I'm connected to
the remote unit, I then turn my Control K3 off, do something
else, and come back an hour later and turn my Control K3
on (and it connects again), the audio on my Control K3 is now
on.  The noise is adjustable via the Control K3 volume control,
but there its just noise- just no audio.  If I take the Control K3
out of Term mode to Norm mode, the audio is again muted.
How can I mute the local audio when I turn on the rig?  Again,
I searched through the most current Programmers Reference
on the web, but can't find a software command to mute that
audio, and if I did, I would probably mute the audio at both
the Control and Remote K3s.  The Firmware update area just
says the Control K3 audio will be muted.

W1UE: Re: K3 & Remote Rig Questions

Hello Dennis,

Yes, there is a serial port command to switch the radio between Terminal
and Normal mode. ("RRT;" and "RRN;")

It is recommended to have both volumes knobs turned all the way down
when powering down the remote and control K3. This way on power up, you
will not have excessive audio coming from the remote and the control K3
will already be muted.

I hope this information helps.

Re: W1UE: Re: K3 & Remote Rig Questions

Thanks for the Reply.  Your tip on the K3 was almost right on- I
found that all you have to do is turn the AF to minimum while
the Control K3 is off.  Then, when you turn it on, the Control K3
reads the minimum setting and the audio from it never comes on.

I tried the RRT; and RRN; using a CAT command in N1MM.  Neither
seems to work, and both lock up the Control K3 and I have to
power cycle it to restore it.  I also don't see those commands
documented anywhere.

Sending RRT; to the control K3 will put it in terminal mode, but it
will not put the remote K3 in Remote mode, so the control K3 will
appear to hang, as it's now waiting for RR commands that are not
coming. I don't know if there's any way to get the necessary RRR;
command to the remote K3 from your local N1MM Logger instance....
