K3 S/N 4359 - It's Alive! (And Thanks)

Jim / W6JHB
Finished assembly of my K3/100 serial number 4359 this afternoon. What an easy, trouble-free build. Everything checks out, the 100W PA works fine, and I'm looking forward to getting some sort of antenna up in the air to make some QSOs. Only had two minor issues during the assembly. First, I accidentally dumped my 32-bin plastic parts tray over, with most of the K3 nuts, washers, etc. falling into the chassis / RF board - arrrghhhhh! Then, when I was almost finished, I heard something rattling in the front panel unit. Thinking it was from the dumped parts bin, I ripped the K3 apart, including the front panel. Only to find out that the rattle was caused by my not having tightened down the knurled ring on the phones jack on the front!!!

Anyway, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Wayne and Eric for designing such a great rig. Assembly couldn't have been easier - the manual was exceptional!

And lastly - a BIG attaboy for Susan and Ryan at Elecraft - they had their names in the packing slips on all the parts bags and not one item was missing - thanks folks!!!

How long did it take you to build the K3?

Roughly about 10 hours, and I really took my time. Did it over about 2-1/2 days. That includes ALL parts inventory and the clean-up from dumping the parts bin into the unit halfway through! It truly was a piece of cake.

Hi Jim,
Glad to hear you were successful. It's always nice to hear a story with a happy ending. :)

Thanks.  I just started looking at them seriously. I am in Dallas and Hamcom is next Friday so I thought I would take a look at them again.  I was thinking about getting the 100watt kit and then adding to it later.  Is that a good way to go or is it hard to add modules after it's built?

Hi Alan - thanks! It was fun to build (although I do miss the smell of that rosin core solder) - gotta get a KX1 for Christmas!

From what I've seen, it is a snap to add modules. In fact, the XYL pinched my pocketbook when I was getting ready to order and I had to cut the KBPF3 (General Coverage band pass filter module) and the associated 6KHz crystal filter from my list. As I built the rig, I saw how easy it'll be to add those two items when dollars are a tad more available. In the case of these two items, it simply requires taking out a few small screws holding the top cover in place, plugging in the KBPF3, removing the front half of the bottom cover and inserting the new crystal filter & retaining screw. Bolt the covers back on, run the K3 Utility software and let the K3 know about the new stuff just installed.

My build of the K3 included the KAT3 internal antenna tuner, the 100-watt amp, and two additional crystal filters. Those were the the only options I went for on this go-round.

I sold off a K2 and an Icom 756 Pro III to get this rig, and so far I'm quite impressed. Now, if the sun would cooperate and get spotty, I'd really be happy. Today's conditions on 20 meters in north central California are pathetic - almost ZERO signals heard. Last night I was running only 30w into a crummy Buddistick and I worked KH6AT over in Hilo, HI on 40 CW - my first K3 QSO. (And Bryce was also running a K3)
