If you're anticipating a treat when you get your hands on a K3 to operate
for the first time, you'll be blown away with two of them in a SO2R configuration. I ran two K3s tonight in the NCCC Sprint and experienced yet another level of operating pleasure. Incomparable. Prior to this, with the K3 in one ear and another radio it the other ear, the K3 was strikingly better to listen with. But, with both radios being K3's, it is wholly different than any prior operating session. It feels like I entered a new hobby. And, even after three months of operating the K3, I'm still not fully accustomed to its many features and performance. Tonight, for example, I would sometimes switch both sides of the headphones to one K3. But, it sounded like only one earpiece was working. I ignored that until after Sprint and then discovered that, yes, there was audio in each side when switched to one radio. It only sounded like the signal was in one spot because I had the AFX Binaural feature turned on. This effect was accentuated by the much lower noise component in the audio of the K3, even on 40, 80 and 160. So, it appeared like only one earpiece was working, when in fact several great features of the K3 were combining to put the CW signal in a precise spot in my sensory perception. With the K3, my brain needs to be re-trained to copy CW without the background rumble of noise and distortion and extraneous artifacts that I hear with other radios. And the AFX feature in this significantly higher fidelity environment is simply stunning. I apologize for feeding any "K3 arrival anxiety" some of you may have, but continue to be patient ... Aptos is pushing these puppies out the door. You may also be REALLY miffed that someone is enjoying two K3s when you don't yet have your first one. But, its only because I was one of the first to put my money down when it was introduced at Visalia in April, in addition to being a field tester. (I remember asking Eric if it was a problem for me to put down a deposit on a production unit when I was already on the field test team. He replied, "Heck no, if you pay money, you're a customer. We don't discriminate!") 73, Ed - W0YK _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
