K3 - SSB Carrier Offset Menu Item?

Geoffrey Downs-2
This is my first posting but I have been watching the reflector with interest for some time. After good experiences building and using a T1 and an XG2 and getting to feel that my FT1000 MP Field - which has given me good service - has an ageing rx design that sometimes struggles to cope with today's noisy low band condx, I talked myself into ordering a K3 kit in time to get into the first production batch. Like others I am to say the least very much looking forward to receiving it - all the indications are that it will be an excellent transceiver.

In the meantime I have a question about K3 tx audio which I have not been able to find the answer to on the reflector or FAQs but forgive me if I have missed it. My main interest at present is ssb dx on 80m and (obviously) it's important to have clean tx audio with punch, so I take trouble to try to set it up right.  At the moment I get good results with a Heil HC4 and the Field which of course has a processor and various menu settings that affect the tx audio including items for "carrier offset" for tx and for the processor (both USB and LSB). I have found that small adjustments to the "carrier offset" items can add to the tx audio punch and clarity without creating splatter or other adverse effects and others have found so too. I like what I have read in the FAQs and on the reflector about the K3 mic gain, the processor, the equaliser and use of the HC4, but I wonder if in the K3 there are also menu items for "carrier offset" or equivalent that would have a similar effect to the Yaesu menu items? Or maybe the equaliser will enable that effect to be achieved. Any thoughts would be welcome.

In the K2 this is adjustable in firmware. I find it inconceivable that
there would not be a similar option in the K3. In addition it has also
been stated on this reflector that the audio DSP can be used to adjust
both transmit and receive audio passbands.

Talking to the believers...  I predict that the K3 will become the IC-706 of
our new day.  That is, it will blow the market apart in terms of price to
performance and within a year, virtually every active ham will either have
one (lucky) or want one soon.

I just hope Elecraft can cope with the demand.  Smaller companies have been
covered up with orders that take them, unfortunately, down....  Hold on,
Elecraft, we are pulling for you... the little engine that could.... or
must.  73

Here's a thought.  Elecraft scores a hit with the K3, appealing to the
general market but struggles under the mound of orders.  Once-dominant
Kenwood, buys the US-based company and moves production & testing to
Japan.  The K3 survives, Kenwood's presence in ham radio increases with
no engineering effort on their part.  Elecraft as a name disappears and
unfortunately so does the innovation, forward-thinking and risk-taking
that has made them such a great source of gear.

The solution?  We all get assembly skills and go to work for Elecraft to
make sure they have the production capability to keep up.

And, of course, we'd get employee discounts :-)

Over many years in the R&D business, I learned that there is a contractor to
do most anything in CA.  You have such a base of Aerospace cos. who scramble
now for a piece of the pie, that there are contract manufacturers and board
houses to expand your production capability.  The trick is to find the good
ones, who can work with you on your schedule and price point.

However, there are easier ways now to ramp up production on mass items like
circuit boards now that robotic assembly is common for surface mount
components.  The leaders at Elecraft impress me as folks who carefully think
things thru, and work for the joy of what they have created, not just for
the bucks they might earn.  I would think they have their ducks lined up
before the K3 was ever announced.

Thank you Elecraft for responding to my question by adding to the FAQs. I am
pleased with the answer.

Also thanks to Julian (G4ILO) for his comment.

Roll on first shipments!
