K3 SSB Monitor Suggestion

I'm normally on CW, and the only SSB activity here is in contests, when I use headphones and the attached boom mic. I thought I would try 6M in the VHF contest today, and plugged in a hand mic. The blast of feedback reminded me to turn off the monitor. But there isn't a button for that - as everyone knows, you have to punch the monitor knob and turn the level down to zero. It would nice to have a button somewhere (even one that is user programmed) that could turn the monitor on/off, rather than messing with the level control (which could then be left at its setting of choice).

Another vote for this feature request. It seems it should be feasible
to add a MENU:MONITOR On/Off toggle, which could then be applied to
one of the programmable function buttons. Of course Wayne has a list
as long as his arm of "little things" like this, so don't expect it
overnight, but if there's enough interest, we've seen what can happen :)

BTW, monitor level is stored separately for SSB vs CW, so once you have
each mode setup, there shouldn't be any issue with switching back and
forth.

My issue is that I use SPKR+PH most of the time, so I can listen without
having to have my headset on, but put it on when I want to transmit.
Ideally, I'd like to get the monitor audio in the headphones only, and
not in the external speakers (which produces feedback). As it is, I have
to remember to either turn SPKR+PH off, or turn the monitor level down.

No No No! Leave the monitor going into speakers as it is. I use speakers
socket on the rear panel for the headphones for referee in WRTC like
competition. The referee supposed to be able to hear what I transmit.
Frankly I do not understand all that feedback issue. There is feedback when
the speaker is on. Then I turn SPKT+PH of with one of the programmable
buttons and there is no feedback at all. Or do you mean that someone can
keep monitor level so high that it find its way from the headphones into the
mike? I don't believe it. I admit having some button to switch monitor off
can be convenient if  one routinely uses speaker for RX and desk top
microphone for TX. Having said that one is probably not contesting with such
an arrangement and therefore has plenty of time to just turn the monitor
volume down.

It seems to be the way of life that one person's requirement to "add  
more salt"  run's head long into another's view that "it's quite salty  
enough".

With so many cooks suggesting new seasonings, it's a wonder the  
Elecraft team has kept the soup flavored so well :-)

So plug one set of headphones in the front and the other in the back,
or just a 'Y' splitter.... but I'd envisaged it being a configurable
option, if it's even feasible at all.

One of the complaints regarding the Orion 2 was that it took an engineer to
use it.  A good friend was advised by a top operator in ARRL that he might
better consider a PRO 3 than the Orion 2 which was too complex.   The idea
that the Orion 2 was to complicated is a falsehood but the rig took time to
learn.   This is also true for the K3 and maybe even more so.   I noted in
the past week a new K3 being sold because it was too complex for the owner.
I have at times wondered why my K3 was not transmitting only to find that
inadvertently some menu item had been changed.   We have all seen similar
problems on this reflector.   Elecraft has done a fine job but it is hard to
satisfy us all and I sympathize with the design dilemmas Elecrafter face.

Next week I may be looking for another feature so I hope you forget what
EI2CN has written by then.

I do not want no connections in the front at all. I need clear access to the
front panel 48 hours of the contest. On the other hand using separate AF amp
for the referee makes sure that in case some short circuit happens in his
headphones I will not loose audio in mine. This is very well thought out in
K3.
