I actually listened to the entire Sherwood presentation to
the Boulder Amateur Radio Club while I was puttering around today. http://www.sherweng.com/audio/Barc-Edited.mp3 Some of his comments addressed the K3 and were quite complimentary. At 1:12:49 into the presentation, he did mention that the receive audio sounded harsh to his ears, and that he measured harmonic distortion in the audio output. The distortion was at a low level, but audible to the ear. He did say that he mentioned it to Elecraft and they were looking at it. Any thoughts from users on audio harshness? Dave,
The rig sounds much like a IC-765..IMHO. I have found that it is not harsh to my ears, but my ears are not perfect. To many hours with headphones on...to much rock and roll...to much time behind the console at the radio stations. It is much better than the 756PROII and is much more quiet. I found that it really likes 4 ohm speakers....although the 8 ohm work....they seem a little down or off in audio quality. I am using Midland Mobile Radio speakers right now which are like Motorola or GE communication speakers. They were free! That was recommended by N0SS. Headphones are Heil...and they sound pretty darn good. The K3 can use two speakers for pseudo stereo effect. That is very cool...the AFX feature makes listening to SSB a joy. The AFX has a much more "depth" sound to it. CW is clean too, but again...I do not have a meter. I am just giving you a report from a user. I do not find it harsh. One of the things I like about the audio that is has a lot of it. It doesn't take much to drive the speaker to distortion so the rig has plenty of audio to drive the speakers. There is a menu item that you can either set the audio to HI or LO. I've spend some time listening to TX5C over the course of the last week...and I know that if I had done that with the PROII...my ears or brain would be very tired. No so with the K3. The fatigue of listening is just not there. I could testify to that between the PROII and the K2 as well. Not scientific comments....just from a user. OK, so here's my question. How is the K3 audio compared to the K2? I'm
only interested in CW purity and low noise. I remember the K1 sounded great, K2 wasn't quite as good but is still good. I'm assuming the K3 takes another small step downward due to more processing stages. Anyone out there who can compare K3 to K2 for CW RX audio? - Keith N1AS - - K2 5411.ssb.100 - - K3 Wave 3 - _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi,
If the Ducie and Clipperton island expeditions were used to judge the transmit audio quality of the K3 (Ducie) and the Pro III, K3 would emerge as a clear winner. TX5C audio varies from fair to poor, often muddled with no highs at all. Once when they changed operator, the audio immediately went from fair to poor, so I assume that they use their own boomsets. I wonder how they are doing, the storms last night seemed to have unsettled them a bit. I see them on the cluster on 80 and 40 this morning, so I guess they are OK. ab2tc

Yes but just to note that the specific issue raised here concerns RECEIVE audio quality, not TRANSMIT audio quality.
