This is an example of a nit that someone wants to make into a major issue.
The engineers could be working on fundamental things that would benefit the radio overall (variable roofing filter is an example) that are substantial resource burners.
Instead some one points out how backward the k3 must be since other radios have had this tone control for years, and how this is such a serious impact for the contester. And lets face it -- it is a nit. But the more people who weigh in on the easy-to-understand-problem (Hey, lets have a survey!) the bigger it will seem.
Now engineering talent will be devoted to prioritizing it into a list of a hundred other nits. One day it will get done because the engineers could fix 6 nits instead of one harder problem, and the statistics will look good - "My, how responsive the elecraft team is."
And the harder more fundamental problem waits for another turn in the list of 100.
