K3 Software

Tom Wylie
I built my K3 about 2 months ago and have now made a couple of thousand
QSOs with it and am very satisfied.

Question:      Should I upload the latest software?

What is the latest NON BETA version that is stable and works?
What is the latest BETA version and should I go for it?

What improvements/differences can I expect?

yes.

it will display in the Elecraft Utility program when you start it and look for
updates.

you can find the non Beta and Beta version on Elecraft's ftp server.
ftp.elecraft.com

> What improvements/differences can I expect?

you find a file called hfwnotes.rtf in the zip file of the firmware.

The latest beta is 3.34.

Hi Tom,
Everyone will answer that question differently dependent on which feature set is most important to them and what hardware they have installed in their K3. Have a look at:

ftp://ftp.elecraft.com/K3/firmware/beta/hfwnotes.rtf

From these notes, you can determine which release has the features that are important to you. I keep all previous 'known' firmware releases on my hard drive in separate folders and also download the latest beta release. This allows me to experiment with the latest, whilst having a known version to fall back on. This method takes all 'risk' out of the equation and allows you to contribute to firmware development.

At the moment my 'known' release is V2.23 which I have played with for a couple of weeks without problems and would recommend for a basic K3.

There have been a flurry of releases recently introducing new firmware and fixing old bugs which seems to be coming to a head before formal release (currently V2.34). I wouldn't bother with the current latest formal release (V2.02) as it seems to be completely out of date.

Julian, G4ILO
My guiding principle has always been "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Since nothing is broken for me that the latest firmware builds fix, I'm sticking with the version I'm using.

I'd wait until the latest beta (now 2.34) has been out there a week or
two and then consider it a de-facto official release and use it.  By
then users will have spotted all but the most obscure and/or least
offensive bugs and they will have been corrected.

I'm on the fast track myself though.

I have loaded every new / beta release since I received the rig in
March.  The firmware has never impacted how I operate.

Tom,

The improvements/differences that you can expect are to be found in the
Firmware Release Notes. In K3 Utility, click on Help and you can read
the Release Notes and decide for yourself.

If the newest Beta has any impact on the configuration of your K3, I
encourage you to try it.  If you do not like what you find, simply
revert to the last public release.
