I agree. As long as you don't have to touch the buttons on the front
panel and let the logging software change your bands and modes - just use the VFO, AF/RF Gain, Width and RIT knobs, it's an unbeatable radio. And I didn't drink the Kool-Aid! Thanks for the Q in NAQP. 73 Hank K8DD Lee Buller wrote: > > For all the discussion on knobs and software issues....the K3 is the best rig I've ever owned for CW contesting (or any mode of operation). I could not agree more. We used mine at the WS4Y FD for the CW station and it was roundly praised by some very accomplished CW contesters. So far FD has been my only chance to try it in contest conditions but I'm thinking about a serious effort in the 160 CW contests this winter.

Does anybody buy a piece of ham gear for the knobs? That's it? The knobs?
I had a knob split on my K3. Elecraft replaced it right away. In the mail by the time I hung up the phone. Case closed. You can bet behind the scenes Wayne is really annoyed busting mfr chops about getting knobs that don't split without having to raise the price 200 bux for machined knobs. What did the guy say, a little expensive? Yeah, just a little... It's a radio. I want to hear stuff. I can get knobs on stuff that doesn't hear. If I want to get tactile, I turn on the old 75A3. Nuthin modern FEELS like the old Collins gear. Heavy metal, R390A, wonderful gear mechanisms. But none of them HEAR like the K3. K3 is the first out-of-the-box modern radio that I am sure will always hear CW better than a R390A. But the original 1954 purchase price (this was the *reduced cost* version of the R390) in current dollars would be around $24,000. You can get real nice knobs on a $24,000 radio. 73, Guy. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Oh good grief... what is it about a dissenting opinion that gets people
riled up in this group? So I didn't like the knobs. I'm not the only one. The K3 is a damn good radio, and I've said that more than once. However, it isn't perfect. Nothing is. I felt like I had improved my K3 with the installation of those aftermarket knobs. To me, I'm a little happier using my radio now than before. And you know what? It still hears stuff... just with stronger knobs. I didn't realize that experimentation, improvisation, and the general spirit of amateur radio excluded knobs. I can't understand why one wouldn't want to have box that hears well and has a great tactile feel to boot... 73 de James K2QI ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

There are several buttons/switches on the front panel that I can press (tap or hold - it doesn't make a difference) and sometimes nothing happens. Then there are times that I want to switch sidebands (ALT) and I hold the button and sometimes it switches 1, 2, or 3 modes and then reverses the sideband. Same thing has happened with the BAND buttons. And I no longer have a light touch on the buttons. And, yes, I have turned on the button beeps and confirmed that when nothing happens, there are no beeps and when there are multiple actions the beeps are strange. This is the 4th or 5th front panel board that has been in the radio, and this one is better. One ham said that I just know when to press them when they aren't being scanned! But happens on mine and I've done it on both K3s at the booth in Hamcom. My K3 did make a trip back to Elecraft and they checked out the front panel (among other things) and said the buttons/switches are fine. My logging programs (Logger32, Writelog, N1MM and Win-Test) keep me from using a lot of the buttons/switches - and that's fine. It's still the best receiver I've ever used in spite of the buttons/switches and knobs! 73 Hank K8DD ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
