I have not detected birdies in the K3, but have not used it a 28-MHz
so far. Until I have a VHF transverter I will not be able to examine this very well, but I will be using 28-MHz as an IF for both 144 and 1296 MHz. But is the stiffener standard on radios after spring-2010? My K3 is #4043. I can see that additional ground plane surrounding the synth may reduce susceptibility to birdies internally generated in the K3. ------------------------------ Message: 42 Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2010 21:19:08 -0700 From: Wayne Burdick <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 Synthesizer Stiffener Plate Mod To: Guy Olinger K2AV <[hidden email]> Cc: [hidden email] Message-ID: <[hidden email]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed Exactly. 73 Wayne N6KR On Sep 6, 2010, at 8:28 PM, Guy Olinger K2AV wrote: > I think there may be a bit of extra shielding with the plate on the > front of the board. All synth boards are shipping with the stiffener for some time. To
quickly verify yours, remove the top cover. See page 6 of http://www.elecraft.com/manual/ELECRAFT%20KSYN3%20Stiffener%20Mod%20Rev%20D.pdf The stiffener plate is quite obvious in appearance. Note to Elecraft, the stiffener is STILL not listed on the mods page. It is only seen in the order page, therefore the serial number onset of the stiffener in production is not available as it is for other modifications. 73, Guy.
