RE: K3 Tops the List!

Joe Subich, W4TV-3

Those numbers are big ... Congratulations to Eric, Wayne and
the rest of the development team.   To combine the best close
spaced dynamic range (by a wide margin), ultimate sensitivity
as good or better than the other top performers and the best
phase noise number is absolutely outstanding.

I wonder how long it will be before other makers stop pushing
their claims as the highest performing HF + 6 M amateur radio
transceiver available?

73,

You can bet the marketers at Ikensu are trying to come up with a suitably
ambiguous set of weasel-words even as we speak.  :-)

It looks like all the top radios are American Made

While the figures are excellent, I suspect Elecraft will want to do better.  A dynamic range of 101 dB at 2kHz is remarkable.

I am surprised a crystal filter can take the power for a 140 dB blocking dynamic range. The post mixer amplifier must have been very difficult to design as I recon it would be producing nearly a watt under those conditions.

I wonder if it is physically possible to do anything about the far out dynamic range beyond 10kHz which is a "mere" 104 dB. We already know we want 140dB to cope with 40m broadcast signals from 7.1-7.3 MHz and while the phase noise is an issue, a narrow band LC filter in the IF in front of the crystal filter may help a little. Maybe an LC notch filter to put on the strong broadcasters?

Take a look at <http://www.xs4all.nl/~martein/pa3ake/hmode/>:

This is a quote from the conclusion:

It turns out to be quite possible to construct a frontend with a
dynamic range in excess of 120dB in SSB bandwidth on 40M. The best
news maybe is that it is possible with components that are readily
available today. No impossible to get specialized surplus parts are
needed. Everything is still off-the-shelf, also the special QT
crystals used in the roofing filter. However good quality polystyrene
capacitors may become more and more a problem as many manufacturers
have stopped production of those capacitors as far as I know years
ago. Most certainly alternative good RF grade caps will remain
available, although probably a bit expensive.

Re: K3 Tops the List!

Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Hi Toby,

The 120db dynamic range is possible with both signals in the passband IF
everything which follows the hybrid crystal filter is very robust and its
noise figure is low, a low noise figure to keep the gain ahead of the filter
as low as possible of course.

My QT crystals are to be delivered soon :-)

I'm going to suggest an engineering change to make the fans
noisier so you don't need to look. 8^)
