K3 Transmit ALC characteristics

Torrey Mitchell
The K3 manual says to set your mic gain so the ALC meter hits about 5 with
occasional peaks to 7 while using a normal speaking voice.i.e. keep it
within the ALC brackets below the meter.  I'm using a Heil PE-781 microphone
with a wind screen.  The ALC kicks up to the recommended range beginning
with a mic setting about 30.  What confuses me is that the ALC kick, audio
quality, and transmit wave form don't seem to change between mic settings 30
and 60.  Is that normal experience.  What mic setting should I use?

Thanks,

Torrey N9PY

Restore Digital Voice Recorder key functions

G4BVY
During a recent contest some random sequence of key presses managed to turn
the DVR M1 button into a two-tone generator on/off button.  Nice feature -
but not required!

Is there an easy way to restore the M1 key functionality?

Roger - G4BVY

Re: Restore Digital Voice Recorder key functions

Cady, Fred
Hi Roger,

Sounds like the M1 key got programmed to activate the Config menu 2
Tone.
You can try to recover the messages keys by the following:

8.3.4 Message Memories and Programmable Function Keys
As Section 8.1.1 above describes, M1 - M4 and M1 - M4 can be used
programmable function keys and macro keys. When they are, you cannot use
them for message keys, but any pre-recorded messages saved for these
keys can be recovered.
1. Switch to CW mode.
2. Tap REC.
3. Then tap the buffer you would like to restore (M1 - M4).
4. Then tap REC again.
5. Switch back to SSB mode.
Once you have done this, M1 - M4 and M1 - M4  are restored to playing
and repeating messages.

(From page 208, "The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration, and
Operation").

Hi Fred,
Brilliant !!!!  If you had given me a million years I wouldn't have guessed
that solution!  I'd been delaying purchasing your book - now I'm sold.

Thanks
Roger
