K3 Utility Going Bonkers

I have a desktop running Win 7/64 and a FTDI KUSB. But when I looked per
W4TV's note below, I couldn't find "Power Management." Might you two both
be using laptops, so that the problem is limited to battery power?

It's on my Win7 box.

After you click 'Control Panel' from the Start menu, it's easier to navigate if you
select either 'Large icons' or 'Small icons' from the 'View' menu. It seems to be set
to 'Category' by default. Setting it to one of the icon views, 'Device Manager'
actually shows up in the list.

After you get into device manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers
node, then right click on each entry of interest and select 'Properties'. On that
dialog, select the 'Power Management' tab.

Same on both flaptop and desktop. Nothing to do with battery power.

My Win7 works fine without changing those settings. I am using self-built
PC with Intel Board. The PC issue could be a Bios setting.

Another easier way to get to the USB settings is to click on the lower right
task bar for the power setting. (Looks like a battery.) Then you can go
into advanced settings after choosing change settings and shut off the power
saving for USB devices. Based on what you originally described... it really
sounds like you have something else going on. IF you are on a laptop and on
battery and your battery is low that may cause the USB devices to be shut
off. A bad MOBO, loose connection, etc., can cause issues as well.
