Hello group
Is it normal while turning the Main VFO Knob I hear some noise like friction? no there is not too much friction. I dont hear such noise on my old IC-746 73, Claude VE2FK ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Yes. > I dont hear such noise on my old IC-746 The K3 uses a fiber disk to provide the friction. The result is a slight bit of noise as the knob rotates along the disk. I've read suggestions to use various other materials including felt. When the AF is up I don't even notice it. 73, de Nate >> -- "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist fears this is true." One advantage of assembling the K3 from a kit is that you learn how it is built mechanically, which is often useful. Assembly is really easy, though I recommend buying a nice, new number 0 Phillips screwdriver.

I got the same issue and mine is a factory build. Doesn't seem to be hurting anything, however.

What "fiber"? Mine was a kit and the material was definitely felt washers (2 in the kit).
I could never get the feel I wanted and didn't like the sound either. I replaced the washers with a single, larger homemade felt washer that just fits the recess in the knob and is glued in, so there is only one sliding surface. Just a tiny swish now and acceptable feel, hopefully without too much loading on the bearing(s) in the shaft encoder. Well, I removed the knob and the felt washer... and just turning
the shaft with my fingers I can hear the friction noise. Of course that is with the RX muted, computer off in a quiet shack. Maybe I have a bad encoder... 73 de Claude VE2FK K3# 3889 ----- Original Message ----- From: Nate Bargmann To: [hidden email] Sent: Wednesday, November 24, 2010 3:48 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO converter/Knob * On 2010 24 Nov 12:37 -0600, Claude Du Berger wrote: > Hello group > Is it normal while turning the Main VFO Knob I hear > some noise like friction? no there is not too much friction.
