I ordered a K3 (assembled unit) last week, and signed onto
the reflector. Since then, I've noticed that the vast majority of units being delivered are in kit form. Why is that? To save a couple hundred bucks? Because people enjoy building their radios? Or is there some delivery time advantage for those folks who order kits? Thanks. I've been wondering the same thing. In Sept. I ordered the kit version
to save money. I figured it was worth my while to spend 8 hours and save $200. At this point, however, I've become rather busy with a silly photography hobby / business so time is a premium for me. I'm toying with changing the order to factory assembled. I don't think there is any delivery advantage in kit vs. factory assembled. Remember that all of the prior Elecraft stuff has been kit. Most of us enjoy building. If we didn't we probably wouldn't have bought an Elecraft. So with a client base that enjoys building, it is only natural that many of the rigs sold would be kits. BTW, congrats on the K3 order. - Keith N1AS - - K2 5411.ssb.100 - - K3 Wave 3 - -----Original Message----- I ordered a K3 (assembled unit) last week, and signed onto the reflector. Hi Dave
A high percentage of us are dedicated kit builders and previous Elecraft customers :-) The K2 was sold as a kit radio, and look how many have gone out so far, over 6000. My own feeling is that if I build a radio, if it ever needs to be worked on, I have no trouble lifting the lid and rummaging around in it. After all, I put all those little pieces in place myself. Same applies to doing mods to the radios or upgrades. True, the K3 comes more as an assemble-it-yourself kit, rather like assembling a computer. Even so, for many of us there is a desire to know what goes on under the hood, and putting the pieces in place is a good start. I'm still waiting for mine, probably April at best at this point. 73, Bob N6WG ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Hachadorian" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Friday, February 22, 2008 12:40 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - Why buy a kit? > I ordered a K3 (assembled unit) last week, and signed onto > the reflector. > > Since then, I've noticed that the vast majority of units > being delivered are in kit form. Dave,
Since Elecraft started out as a Kit business....they ship in each kit a vial of Elecraft Mojo. Now, this Mojo makes things....well....better. This vial of Mojo is quite concentrated and it only comes in the kit. My K2 still has a lot of Mojo left in it and I have used very little from the first vial. Besides, I save 200 bucks! Lee - K0WA In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply. If you don't have any Common Sense - get some Common Sense and use it. If you can't find any Common Sense, ask for help from somebody who has some Common Sense. Is Common Sense divine? _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Over here in Eu there's an added reason: less tax on a kit

From the standpoint of knowing your radio it is not a bad idea to build the kit. The kit gives you the advantage of knowing where everything is in the event you might need to pull a board for repair or add an additional feature. I think the effort in building the kit is minor compared to the benefits.

I wonder how many of the kit builders were previously infected by the HeathKit virus (1000+ strains) and never fully recovered?
