K3 additions

cheng076

I'm getting back to ham radio after some 20 years. I recently received my KX3 kit #1716 and the build went smoothly. At least it works! I am so impressed with it and what I hear from Lyle and others in the local QRP group that I ordered a K3 .. arrives tomorrow. Now I have something similar to buyers remorse... what addons would be best for my K3? I love CW and am working hard on getting my code speed back up but I do enjoy SSB in the mean time. I anticipate working CW most of the time when I get better at it. I have not tried any of the digital modes... yet! Hi Hi They seem sort of impersonal and a bit like cheating ;-)) to my way of thinking.

If you're really into CW, you might consider one of the tighter roofing filters (250, 400, 500 Hz).  Generally the data modes use small passbands too.

It's an addiction. I say, load it up. I got mine with dual rx, extra roofing filters, pa, recorder, and tuner. Don't forget the p3. It is a really sweet add on. Just got my kx3 yesterday (assembled). What an awesome little beast. Already worked a bunch of qsos. Enjoy!

I did order the 400Hz filter.  Maybe I should have included the addons I have ordered.

K3/100   just in case I need the power;-))

KAT3 tuner

KRX3

KBPF3

MH2

KFL3A-400

Thanks for the suggestion however.

Thanks Mike. I would love to load it up but social security only goes so far. I'll need to get rid of my ageing Icoms (IC751A and IC740 ) to help pay for the K3 but that's for later. Anyone know of a good place to list used gear?

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and sorry if there is OT here but I tend to ramble... as you can see.hihi

I have a 250 Hz filter I use for PSK31. It seems to improve
reception with the normal numbers of signals on 20 meters. I
does wonders with nearby strong signals.

I am using the computer as a pan adapter, so I have to narrow
the bandwidth around the desired signal manually. (I have a K3
button assigned to opening the bandwidth up again at the end of
a QSO.) When my P3 arrives (RSN I hope), I plan to try to use it
as the pan adapter, tune with the K3, and just have the computer
do fine tuning and QSO recording.

Regarding the digital modes: I see PSK31 as a rag chewing mode.
Transmission speed is about the same as typing speed from a good
typist. It is easy to demodulate the 31 Hz bandwidth signal if
there is a 31 Hz guard band on either side, making is a good
neighbor on crowded bands. I also see some PSK61, which is twice
as fast and good for the macro driven "599 73 OM QRZ?" type of
contacts. The WSJT modes can get a signal through when the noise
floor is higher than the signal.

While I'm not a CW operator, I'm working in that direction.
Narrow bandwidth and no computer are compelling characteristics.
