Hi guys.
Even if I like very much HRD I decided to stop with it due to stressing faults (I really hate) in serial communication that suddenly and frequently cause AGC going off. I'm a Mac user and right now I virtualized at it an XP Pro just and only to run HRD. I'm planning to move to a 100% OSx native application for digi modes. I'm thinking to Fldigi or MacLoggerDx/cocoa ... or anything else, any suggestion it will be appreciated. I use Signalink Usb and I already saw it works from Mac side (Fldigi decodes traces perfectly) I'm not OSx skilled so I'd need some help/suggestions from Mac users relevant to Usb/rs232 adapter under OSx (I use Keyspan USA19H-1) because right now I have installed driver only into the virtualized XP machine. Now I have to install (I think) something (I'm not sure "driver" it should be the appropriate word) under Mac, to let Fldigi (or whatever else app for digi) CAT running. My questions are: 1) are there any special attention to pay during Usb/232 "driver" installation in OSx ? 2) having the adapter configured under OSx and XP virtualized, will the adapter work in both machines Mac and XP (I'd like for a time to have the possibility to use HRD or Fldigi, not simultaneously of course, just to train myself) ? Many thanks in advance to everybody for help, best 73 Giorgio |
Giorgio,
Like you, I am a Mac user and a windows XP under VMware user. I prefer the Mac apps to the Windows apps and have gone strictly Mac. The signalink USB is redundant, but I have one and use it anyway and I find it to be a flawless performer. Fldigi is absolutely wonderful on MacOS. Cocoamodem is also a very good choice, but I tend to use Fldigi more because it has more "modem" choices (I like to dabble with Olivia, which last I checked wasn't available on Cocoamodem, for example). As far as logging programs go, this topic came up recently on this reflector and you can probably scan back a ways to get everyone's opinions on the relative merits of each. I think there were three that stood out as being top performers. I personally use MacLoggerDX, and it does everything I need it to do. It's a great general purpose logger. If I were heavier into DX, RUMLog or something like that may be a better choice. Again, scan back in this reflector's archives a bit and you will see a lot of discussion about this. Finally, I also use the Keyspan USA19H. There are drivers for MacOS that you will need to get from the vendor's website and install. Installation was straightforward and has worked for me flawlessly. TIP: If I recall correctly, I think I had to reboot the Mac after installing the driver in order to get the unix device to create and initialize properly. I also have the Keyspan drivers installed in Windows XP in my VMware virtual machine on my Mac. Not sure what virtualization you are using, but in my case, I can tell VMware which of my XP VM or my Mac to present the USB device to, and that governs which set of drivers and thus which machine has control of the Keyspan. I tend to set this at start up and not switch back and forth live, so if you intend to do that, in theory that should work, but I have no direct experience with it. Hope that helps. 73 & Aloha, Dave, AH6TD On Oct 24, 2011, at 10:58 AM, ik1bxn wrote: > Hi guys. > Even if I like very much HRD I decided to stop with it due to stressing > faults (I really hate) in serial communication that suddenly and frequently > cause AGC going off. > I'm a Mac user and right now I virtualized at it an XP Pro just and only to > run HRD. > > I'm planning to move to a 100% OSx native application for digi modes. There is a dedicated fldigi reflector on Yahoo ([hidden email]) which is a good place to ask questions regarding this software (Linux, OS X and Windows are supported).

Thanks a lot to all for support.
Dave you helped me very much you clarified doubts I had. Sorry I forgot telling you I'm using VMFusion to virtualize XP. Dave in case of further need may I ask you via e-mail (by using the address at qrz.com) off this reflector? For logging I think I'll go to MacLoggerDx as I like it very much (I installed evaluation version), I wasn't sure it was usable in conjunction with Fldigi...but now also this doubt was gone . I'll subscribe also the Fldigi Yahoo group. Best 73 Giorgio |
Giorgio,
Yes, feel free to drop me a line if you need more help. I am current on qrz.com. One quick point of clarification to make here is that fldigi and MacLoggerDx cannot access the serial port at the same time. There is software available in windows that makes this possible, but I am not aware of any for the Mac. (If anyone knows of serial port sharing software for MacOS, PLEASE chime in!). Aside from this one caveat, fldigi and MacLoggerDX work FB side by side on the Mac. 73 & Aloha, Dave On Oct 24, 2011, at 9:47 PM, ik1bxn wrote: > Thanks a lot to all for support. > Dave you helped me very much you clarified doubts I had. It is worth pointing out that Rumlog and Fldigi happily coexist too. Rumlog will use Fldigi's serial connection to the K3. One further thing is that I had no luck with getting Fldigi to communicate with the K3 and had to use Flrig - from the same author - to do the talking. I have made it all sound much more complicated than it is! It all works well, data mode qsos logged in Fldigi will automatically get entered into Rumlog.
