K3 and MK2R, Again

K5RC
I recently upgraded the firmware in the MK2R and I am back to the old
problem of every time I manually change bands on one of the K3's the MK2R
loses comm and has to be switched off and on. If you type in the frequency
to change bands the problem does not happen. Where is the problem? The
radio? The MK2R? The MK2R Router has K3 Patched selected.

Re: K3 and MK2R, Again

Tom,

I don't use the "Patched" selection and my K3/MK2R combination works fine.
I have no idea what "Patched" means in the MK2R.  As a matter of fact, most
of the microHAM terminology makes no sense to me at all.

Re: K3 and MK2R, Again

K3 (patched) uses a faster response to the loss of data from
the K3 - for example when the K3 is turned off while Router
and a logging program are still running.

The problem is that some logging programs will never time out
and they fill Router's CAT data buffer.  When the K3 is turned
back on, the buffered data must be sent to and processed by
the K3 before the logger, Router and K3 can resynchronize.
The "Patched" version of the protocol dumps polls after aprox
1000 msec to prevent the buffer from overflowing.

Is there a specific reason you "upgraded" from working firmware?

When you uploaded new firmware to MK2R did you:
   1) cycle the power (remove power) to load/initialize the new
      firmware?
   2) Reset Router to its defaults?
   3) select the radio protocol and configure the default data rate?
   4) save the new protocol at data rate to MK2R as defaults?

This sounds like a data clash between the K3 and logging software
that leaves Router unable to read the frequency/mode information.
What logging software?  What is your setting for AUTOINF in the
K3?  What is the polling rate in your logging program?

The K3 stops responding to the CAT port for up to 500 ms when
changing bands (see. K3 Programmers Reference) and then responds
with a significant amount of unsolicited data when the band change
is finished.  It is entirely possible that fast polling from the
logger and AI1 or AI2 in the K3 creates a "stand off."

Try reducing the polling rate in your logging program to 500 msec
between polls and setting Autoinf = nor (off) in the K3 menu.  If
Autoinf is currently nor, try setting it to Audio 1.
