K3 and external receiver

LA7NO
Hello,

My K3 has KPA3 and KAT3 installed, but not the KRX3

The K3 has a nice way of switching antennas when using both main and sub-rx.

I want to use an external rx (R&S EK 896). Is there a nice way to do this?
My main concern is of course to protect the external rx when transmitting
with the K3.

Per-Tore,

I have not tried it, but from a look at the K3 Block Diagram, it would
appear that you could connect the external receiver to the RX ANT OUT
jack (requires the KXV3 option) and tell the K3 to use the RX ANT (that
is a per band setting).

The K3 Low Pass Filters would be in the path between the antenna and
that output, but it is behind the TR switch which should protect the
external receiver during transmit.  Muting the external receiver is not
part of that connection - you are on your own to devise the means for
muting that receiver during transmit.

Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately, I do not have the KXV3 option.

So you need to add it. :) Easy to do -- just order it.

I have the KXV3 option but no sub-rx ......and have been using an ICOM R71A as an external rx to work split chasing the K1N expedition.  I tune to K1N on the R71A and then track the stations he is working on the VFO A in the K3 on my K9AY rx antenna....it has worked successfully.  I mute the R71A with the same key line that runs to the ACOM 1010 amp.

I also have the PR6 preamp connected to the KXV3 jacks and the R71A is fed from the Ant Out jack on the PR6.  In tx mode the internal TR switch in the K3 bypasses the receive antenna circuitry ....  also the muting of the R71A by the key line cuts off that audio.  The split operation sometimes places the tx signal 10khz away from the rx freq of the R71A so even with out muting operation can occur  even running 500w from the amp....

So far so good.
