K3 (and other) utilities not working

Edward Seeliger
Are other folks having trouble getting the Elecraft Utilities to connect to the Elecraft server to check for firmware updates? I get the following error "InternetFindNextFile completed with error 0x00000006: The handle is invalid" when I choose "Copy New Files from Elecraft" - K3 Utility 1.13.2.27.
I get the same error with the P3, KAT500, and KPA500 utilities also - current versions.
I use Win 7 (64) Professional.
Thanks for any help provided.

Can you access the Elecraft FTP site with Internet Explorer? I use the same Wininet library as IE.

could there be a firewall issue?

I've been having the exact same problem here.  It was suggested that my Anti-Virus software was causing the problem but even completely disabling AVG and turning off the firewall in Windows 7 Pro did not help so I'm in the same boat you are.  Others appear to have no problem even using the same op system.  My computer's processor is a 64 bit dual core AMD.  My workaround has been to download the firmware using FTP and manually move all the files into the proper directory.

I'm not sure what it could be then. Something  specific to your environment.
I'm not sure what to suggest.  What is your AV tool? I use MS Security Essentials with Windows 7 64-bit.

Re: K3 (and other) utilities not working

Bill K9YEQ
Whatever AV program you use, doesn't mean you are not subject to a virus
loaded by script via email or an infected web site.  I do computer work as a
part time effort and I spend a lot of time cleaning systems.  Try
downloading an additional program such as Malwarebytes to run a scan.  You
don't need to do more than do a trial version.  Once loaded I usually
uninstall and then download a new version once I get odd behavior on my PC.
There are other programs to use.  The key here is not to have a multitude of
AV programs running at once or you will run into additional problems.  If
you need more help email me privately and we'll go from there.

K3 lock out via Inhibit

Igor Sokolov-2
Yet again I need to organize lock out for a pair of K3s. Therefore  couple
of questions for those who knows how to do it.

1)The manual says one need 2.2 to 10k pull up resistor on pin 7 of the ACC
connector from 5V source. There is no 5V source in ACC connector (BTW
Elecraft could easily provide one either on pin 12 or pin 5. Both of them
are now used for GROUND). The easy answer to the problem is to use 12V  out
RCA socket on the back panel. Is it necessary to step down that 12V to 5V or
it is safe enough to connect say 20K pull up resistor from 12V to pin 7 ?
2) Is it OK to use Keyout-Lp from pin 10 of one radio to Inh pin 7 of the
other radio and vise versa. What I am concerned about is what happen if on
one of the rigs someone unintentionally switch the setting of pin 7  from
Inh to K3 ON?

Yes, thank you Olli. The only problem being that if both stations try to TX
then none of them will.

Re: K3 lock out via Inhibit

alorona
I'm curious... how should that condition be resolved? Should the system randomly
choose one or the other station to transmit, or ...??? If so, then it will
probably need a microprocessor and it will no longer be a 'simple' circuit.

Re: K3 lock out via Inhibit

Don Wilhelm-4
Al,

It is all in the timing.  The first K3 to transmit will get priority.
If both try to transmit at exactly the same time (think milliseconds),
then and only then will both be locked out.

Re: K3 lock out via Inhibit

Igor Sokolov-2
Don,
I do not think so. Inhibit signal does not disable PTT. Therefore when the
first station starts to TX and then the second station presses PTT the first
station TX would get disabled by Inh right in the middle of the
transmission.
I think it would be easily resolved if K3 firmware is changed so that Inh
signal disables PTT in at the same time.

Re: K3 lock out via Inhibit

Val-12

Igor,

Take a look at ACOM 2S1. This little device is intended to allow two
transceivers to share one antenna (amplifier). Its logic locks out them by
TX inhibit.

Many K3s are used with external sequencers which depend on the PTT/Inh
logic remaining exactly as it is now.

A far better place for specialized lockout logic is in a box between the
two K3s.

Re: K3 lock out via Inhibit

Igor Sokolov-2
Ian,
I agree with your note. Having said that there might be a possibility of yet
another  menu setting that would allow different PTT/Inh interaction.
Only designers know what can be easily implemented and what cannot. Separate
lockout box is not a problem for home station. Any extra box when you need
to take rig far away is extra troubles.

Val, thank you.
I know about lockout box from ACOM. But I am after light and easy portable
solution.
