K3 as a SW receiver

T Witherspoon
Hi, Group,

I have a website called SWLing.com that is designed to teach people
(in simple terms) how to operate a shortwave radio. I recently got an
inquiry from one of my website guests that has really taking a shine
to shortwave radio listening. He started by buying a Sony portable,
then purchased the Etón E1 and now he wants a good, robust, tabletop
radio that can be perpetually improved through firmware upgrades. I
think he's a ham in the making and I've even encouraged him to get the
ticket, but at this point he's not considering.

Through his research, he believes the K3 would be the best radio for
the job. While I'm a HUGE fan of the K3 (and Elecraft in general--I
have a KX1 and K2), I'm not sure it'd actually be the _best_ shortwave
receiver for the money.  I know when it comes to CW, SSB and the digi
modes, it would smoke most products on the market. But for AM
broadcast reception, would it outperform a Microtelecom Perseus, AOR
7030+, RX-340 or even an OMNI VII (which I have heard many a SW DXer
brag about)?

I would love feedback from folks who have compared their K3 to a fine
shortwave receiver.

Cheers & 73,
Tom

Hi Tom, Congratulations for the nice website. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the K3/10 for SWL/DXing. I've here some nice receivers, like the ar7030 and nrd-535, and I can say that the K3 is even better for really tough dx. On MW it could have a better sensitivity, however. I received a Perseus SDR this week but did not have time to try and compare it with the K3. BTW, nowadays, a SDR receiver must be considered as it might be the best option. 73, André, PT7AT
