Pf,
I bought the K3/10 without the tuner but added a 6m preamp. My use of the K3 is primarily for VHF/UHF/mw driving transverters to I did not need the 100w PA. For 6m 8w is OK but you probably want more. I bought a used Mirage A-1015G (10w/150w) 6m linear amp and get 125w with 8w drive from the K3. But if you do much HF you probably want more than 12w, so the K3/100 with tuner is a good combo and you do not need a separate 6m PA. **Note: I am building a 300w HF amp from a kit. You state running CW/digital where QRP is easier (12w is quite adequate on psk-31). You can always upgrade to the KPA-100, later. I actually check into the Elecraft SSB Net with 12w, but I am not a contester or DXer (and have a FT-847 when I must do 100w). I have a HF/6m manual tuner so decided against the autotuner as I was investing in filters and sub-Rx (for my particular applications). I got the 2.8-KHz and 400-Hz 8-pole filters as a basic set up for SSB/CW. I added the 13-KHz filter for VHF-FM. I bought the TCXO-3 as high freq. accuracy is needed on 1296-MHz (One of my transverters). ------------------------------------------------------------ Message: 33 Date: Sun, 13 Mar 2011 10:44:56 +0100 From: Pierfrancesco Caci <[hidden email]> Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] decisions, decisions To: [hidden email] Message-ID: <[hidden email]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Finally having enough money to get a K3, but not enough to get all the options I'd like to have from the start, I need to decide what to get. I've read many comments on this mailing list that suggest not to do away with the ATU, for a variety of reasons, so I'll get that. I would like to know how important is the PR6, I like 6m and it's the only band for which I have a decent antenna (a 5el yagi). My activity is a mix of dx chasing, some contesting without sweating it too much and the occasional random qso. Mostly cw/digimodes lately due to small kid and screaming into a microphone not mixing well :-) So I would also like to know how important is to get one extra roofing filter (maybe a 500Hz one) from the beginning, or if I can do without that for the next few months until I can spare some more money for the hobby and get a round of upgrades. I'm also considering going for the k3/10 and get the filters/preamp instead of the k3/100 without the options, if it would give me better results. I'll appreciate your suggestions Pf, ik5pvx 73, Ed - KL7UW, WD2XSH/45 ====================================== BP40IQ 500 KHz - 10-GHz www.kl7uw.com EME: 144-1.4kw, 432-100w, 1296-testing*, 3400-winter?
