K3 :: digital display of RF input level

inventor61 .
Sometimes, the digital readout display of the signal strength 'sticks' at
+99.9 dBV.  Not sure what I am doing to make it happen.

I can "repair" this by selecting some other readout with the B VFO, and
returning to the signal display.

Once I make the "repair" I can't get the problem to come back unless I power
cycle the rig.  Anybody else see this?  Did I do something wrong?

Also, would Elecraft ever consider making a remote coax switch?  I am
shopping for one and I don't see any I like so far.
I'd buy it if there was one that was 'Elecrafty' ... I know that isn't a
word, but everybody reading this knows exactly what I mean.

Hi Steve,

The dBV display is relative to the last AFV display (AFV is absolute).
Here are the steps:

- set up the desired baseline signal condition
- select AFV and let stabilize (about 1 second)
- select dBV, which should now read about 0

Any change in the signal condition will now be reflected in the dBV
display.

Re: K3 :: digital display of RF input level

Milt -- N5IA
My K-3 has been working FB since it was birthed from a cardboard box.

However, when recently moving at a few miles from its normal crib to a
portable contest location a problem showed up.

At the contest site my baby will not make power once the power set control
is advanced to the level where the PA is supposed to kick in.  This is all
bands and all modes.  Everything appears normal without the PA selected.

I have tried the common external things like resetting, etc., to no avail.
There are no error messages and I find no clues in the troubleshooting
section of the manual.

Before digging into it and looking for what I believe might be a physical
thing (loose connection/connector, etc.) does anyone have any history of
this problem occurring previously.  Why reinvent the wheel?

Any ideas anyone?

Milt, N5IA

Did you check that CONFIG:KPA3 is "nor" ?

Re: K3 :: NO RF out of HPA

Milt -- N5IA
Ian,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, the PA is turned on in CONFIG.

Another clue is when TUNE is invoked, the output power does not track the
power setting.  For example, with the power out set to 12 Watts, the actual
power out in the TUNE position is 3.2 Watts.

Then, if I turn the power set upward at the 13 Watt level, the relay cuts in
the PA.  The power out indicator immediately goes to the 13 Watt indication
and will follow up to the 100 Watt level.  But during this excursion there
is actually NO Power Out.

No one else replied with any ideas, so I suppose this is a brand new
situation.  At this point I will open the radio up and see if I can find any
loose connections to the PA.
