K3 doesn't see COM Port on PC anymore

Bob KD7YZ
Howdy K3' people:

Admittedly I've goofed.
That said, I have an EME QSO tomorrow morning and I can't get a program
like 'Commander' to see that the K3 is on COM3.

I'd been fiddling around trying to find a way to make three programs lok
at the K3 and still keep Commander working.

Last used or tried was VSPmgr. Then Com0Com

Anyway, I used windows dev mgr and view hidden ports, got rid of all the
myriad which were the virtual ports.

Left is Com1. I reboot the Win7-64 bit machine, see that the Gigaware
RS232 to USB gets named COM3. Next to verify it's connected to the K3, I
unplugged the cable from the PC. Plugged it back in and it gets
installed as COM4.

Settings show RS232 38400 as does the Dev-Mgr COM4 38400, 8N1

Still, the K3 Utility nor Commander will see that the K3 is connected.

Can anyone please help?    This situation I have never seen, and despite
re-installing the com-port, there are no errors from K3, just the
continual searching for any handshake on whichever port I'd used.

Bob,

If the COM port designation changes for you, then it is a computer problem.
I assume you are using a USB to serial adapter, and the COM port
assignment is at the mercy of the operating system.  Normally if you
plug the adapter into the same USB port, the same number will be
assigned, but plugging it into a different USB port will generate a
different port designation.

If you have opportunity to use a real serial port on the computer, do
so, it will take that uncertainty away.  Otherwise, you need help from
someone who is more familiar than I about how the OS assigns COM port
numbers.  All I know is that my Edgeport 4 port converter usually comes
up with the same ports on my XP system.

OK Don, good idea. I pulled the cable from rotor (COM1) and stuck it on
the K3 ... thus straight to the RS232 port, DB9 on the back of the PC ..
works fine and I'll be able to make the EME sked!

Now to try and find out why the K3 would not see, or be seen by, the
USB/COM port as it has for 6 months.

Was quite a shock.

The XV432 transverter works quite famously in JT65 mode for long periods
of time on EME skeds when the QSO doesn't go in ten minutes. Have had it
up to an hour and the xv432 is still solid.

The watt meter tells me what the output it. The LED's, well, still goofy
and generally just eye-wash for accuracy measured over time.
