K3 encoders?

K2QI
Quick question - are the new K3s still being issued with the four detentless
encoders? In other words, are the filter, mic, and power encoders being used
today the type that are quite stiff to turn and are smooth in feel when
turning them?

The reason I ask is my K3, #2730 used to have the original encoders that
were easier to turn and had a tactile feel when spinning them.
Unfortunately, one of them went bad requiring a replacement of the entire
front panel board.  The board I received had these new encoders and while
are probably a little more accurate, don't have that nice feel I got used
too.

Re: K3 encoders?

Guy, K2AV
I have #1239 and I can feel the detents with a mild resistance.  This
was the same with all the K3's we have had out at NY4A.  Howie's K3's
are in the 900's I think. The resistance seems to lessen mildly over
time, depending on use.

We only shipped with the slightly higher viscous resistance quad
encoders (shift/width/speed/power) for a short interval while we
searched for a new vendor (after the first one stopped making the part.)
We have been shipping K3s with encoders very similar to the original
ones for quite some time.

Hi Eric,

Is there a chance I could swap out boards again? I'm not a huge fan of the encoders I received as replacement.

K3 VFO A encoder replacement

Dick
In reply to this post by K2QI
My encoder failed and I received a replacement. As I did not build my K3, I need step-by-step instructions on how to replace it.

Since the contest is this weekend and I left this to the last minute, I need help quickly. No problem responding off-list.

Thanks to one and all.

Hi Dick,

On our web site you'll find the manual for installing the DVR module.
It includes instructions on removing the front panel.

Once the panel is off, look at the VFO A encoder module. Make sure it
isn't unplugged (due to its hardware becoming loose). If that's the
only problem, plug it back in and tighten the hardware, then reinstall
the FP module as instructed in the DVR manual.

If the VFO A encoder really is defective, not just unplugged, call
sales and ask for a replacement to be sent. Sending it overnight is
expensive, but it will ensure that you have it ready for this weekend.

Re: K3 VFO A encoder replacement

Dick,

The easiest way I can give you instructions for getting to the encoder
backside is to tell you to follow the dis-assembly instructions in the
K3 DSP Low Pass Filter mod kit instructions. You can download from
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/K3_DSP_LP_Filter_Install_Rev_A.pdf.

Of course you will not be installing the LPF, so skip that part of the
instructions.

If you have trouble getting the encoder itself out, download the K3
assembly Manual and reverse the encoder installation steps.
