Re: Tuning Rate

Andy Faber
Another tuning thought:  I'm very happy with my K3 weighted spinner knobs
from N8BX.  The heavy main tuning knob really does let you spin the knob in
the old fashioned way. The sub RX knob also can be spun, though I'm not
quite as happy with that as with the main tuning knob because it is slightly
oversized and can cause your fingers to hit the RIT knob by mistake.  Not
cheap, but a real improvement IMHO.

Re: Tuning Rate

Bob K6UJ
Andy,
I know what you mean, the VFO B knob spinning enhancement is a real improvement.
I dont want to help resurrect the K3 spinner knob discussion with my response, this subject was discussed
at length on the reflector, but to summarize, the various knob options were tried and discussed ranging from
knobs from Icom and Yaesu mobile HF rigs, very nice elegant knobs like the N8BX knobs and buying another
K3 VFO A knob and using it on VFO B.  The K3 VFO A knob is the option I have and although it partially obscures
a small portion of the panel printing it works very well.  I have both knobs adjusted for just a hint of drag (im a spinner)
and I'm as happy as a clam at high tide.

Tired of VFO spinning?

k1htv
In reply to this post by Bill Steffey NY9H
Jim,
If you are tired of spinning your K3 VFO from one end of the band to the
other, and also switching modes when you get there, you might consider this
suggestion. On each band, you can easily set up 4 different go-to frequencies
using the four (M1-4) memory buttons. On each band and for each of 4 modes, tune
VFO-A to the desired frequency, set both VFOs to the same frequency (tap A>B
twice), select a mode, and optimize your filter settings.

To store these settings in one of the four memories:
Tap the V>M button once.
Tap the M# (1-4) button that you want to use for that frequency/mode.

Do this for each of four mode/frequency/filter combinations on each of the bands
from 160M to 6M.  On each band I use M1 for CW,  M2 for SSB,  M3 for PSK31  and
M4 for RTTY. On 30M, where SSB is not allowed, I substituted the WSPR
frequency/mode info for the M3 memory. You can make changes based on your
mode/frequency preferences.

To quickly switch to one of the M1-4 memories:
Tap the M>V button once.
Tape the M# (1-4) once.

This will allow you to quickly move you between frequencies and modes on each
band.

I hope that you find this info useful.

Re: Tired of VFO spinning?

An easy way to set that up is to use the Elecraft K3 Frequency Memory Editor
Software on the website.

This is a very good suggestion, unless you need to use voice/cw memories.

Even when you call voice memories from a software, it mimics pressing the
front panel's button!

Re: Tired of VFO spinning?

Rick Prather-2
With the quick memories set up as described it has no affect on the use of the Memory buttons for CW or Phone memories.

In the case of using the Quick Memories for recalling frequencies you push the "M>V" button first then the M1-M4 buttons if you are recalling the Phone or CW message memories you just push the appropriate M button without the "M>V".

Now that I am used to this arrangement I actually find it quicker than the 3 or 4 button pushes needed to recall the upper band stacking registers on my previous Transceiver.

Also, during contests I will often use the 4 Quick Memories to store a frequency I want to return to to work someone and then after the contest I use the Memory Manager to reset them to the mode specific values.

Re: Tired of VFO spinning?

Felipe Ceglia - PY1NB-2
Ah,

Now I got it, I imagined they would be stored as macros.
I will try using the software to edit & save a bunch of them!

Anyway, it would be good to have a way to have the dvk memories and m1-m4
macros available.

73 & thanks for the tip folks,
