K3 ham vs general band changes

The K3 manual says the Band switch scrolls through the ham bands. But if I
enter a general coverage frequency, say 11.000, it becomes the setting of
the nearest ham band. So, when I'm scrolling, I see 7.000, 11.000, 14.000,
etc. I have to re-enter 10.100 to get 30m to the right setting.

 

11.000 isn't a ham band frequency, so IMHO it shouldn't be stored in the
scrolling order for the ham bands.

 

I think it would be an improvement to have a General Mode (On/Off) or Ham
Mode (On/Off) menu entry that can be programmed into one of the function
keys. In Ham mode, the Band switch would be limited to a configurable set of
Ham-only bands. In General mode, the Band button would be 1 MHz up or down.
If the user enters a Ham or General frequency, the mode could switch
automatically.

 

Does this make sense?

Here's what I'm unclear on.  If I'm on the 20 meter band and I enter
freq 9.8 MHz what happens to my band order as I cycle through them.
Have I "replaced" the 20 meter ban with 9.8 MHz.

Another way to ask the same question, if I want to go to 9.8 MHz, should
I make sure I'm on the 30 meter band BEFORE entering the frequency?

I seem to recall my K2 getting all mixed up if I was on one band and
entered a frequency for another and am wondering if the K3 is the same.

Yes it's a crazy way to change bands. I think the least that could be done
is ....Once you are through snooping around the SW bands and you hit the
BAND button, the K3 should go back to ham bands only and not screw up the
band order. KM5Q posted a neat way to program the keypad for band changing.
It's almost like having a normal keypad but requires an extra button push.
Looks nice but a lot of labor to get all of that programmed. It would be
cool if we could just send a 'memory' file to each other and load our
radios. Maybe that can be added to the K3 Utility someday.

There are a few issues here:

1. With previous versions of firmware (MCU rev 1.78 and below), the
bands could be "messed up" by tuning manually from one band to the next
with the VFO. This was corrected in rev 1.88: now, if you tune cross
one of the K3's internal band boundaries (e.g., 6 MHz between 60 and 40
meters), the VFO you *weren't* tuning will be switched to its last-used
frequency in the new band.

2. We're considering a different tuning option (menu selectable, of
course) where tuning outside any ham band would spawn a "virtual SWL
Band" between the two bands. This would be saved across power cycles.
If you were in the virtual band, tapping band up or down would take you
to the last-used frequencies in the ham bands above and below. The
virtual band would persist until you tuned back out of it, up to a ham
band. (This method is used by at least one other rig -- the FT-817.)

3. When the subreceiver is installed, you'll be able to switch it to a
different band from the main RX/TX by going into BSET mode and using
band up/down (or direct frequency entry). The sub will stay on this
independent band until you go into BSET and "join" the sub back to
main.

At least that's the present thinking. We're open to suggestions.
