K3: independent mic gain

I am just getting No. 1087 up and running. I have a boom mounted mic on the rear conection and a Heil head set with an HC-5 element in on the front connection.  In configuring the the mic gain the setting are being applied to both.  Is this normal or did I miss something? The archives talk of the L/H being fixed a while ago but I saw nothing referring to the gain settings.
