K3 interface with N3FJP FD software

James C. Hall, MD-2
Hello:

I was setting up for using the K3 for FD this year and am having a problem
getting N3FJP FD software to do rig control. This may belong and likely will
go on their reflector as well, but I wanted to see if anyone else has
noticed any problems here. In the software, I choose Elecraft as rig type
and 4800 8-n-1 and the correct com port. Polling the rig fails. I'm just not
sure why. I'm using a Keyspan 4-port serial to USB adapter that we've used
successfully with the K2 for years. It will do CW keying just fine. Curious
.

Go to the CONFIG menu in your K3, find RS232, and set the baud rate to
match what your computer is set to (or vice versa).

Hi Jamie,

It won't use the same serial port both for controlling the rig's band/mode
and keying CW, as far as I can tell. I can get it to do one or the other but
not both. One solution might be to use two USB adapters and make up a
two-headed cable to split the K3 lines between the two ports.

The ideal solution is to fix the software so that it sends CW as serial data
to the K3 internal keyer rather than keying the status lines. Why generate
code the hard way when the radio will do it for you? I'm trying to find a
way to do it myself & will post info to the reflector if I succeed.

Is it standard W1EL chip in the radio that does CW then?
Is  the above approach applicable to K2 as well?

Hi Julius:

Well this is weird. I also use N1MM all the time and can do FSK with a
defined port with rig control. The USB adapter is a Keyspan USA 49WLC which
I have used for several years. It has 4 serial ports defined on my laptop as
com ports 4-7. I use com 4 for rig control and com 5 for CW. CW works FB,
but so far, the rig control doesn't. I'm going to try a different serial
cable on the off chance I grabbed a parallel cable instead of a serial cable
!! :) Hey, been known to happen !

BTW, I loved your profile in NCJ !

Hi Jamie,

That sounds like a defined port address issue. Have
had a similar problem with N1MM when trying to use an
USB adapter. The logging software generally needs a
defined port (COM1, COM2, etc.) to poll. Some USB
adapters are able to do this and some are not.

FYI I've been running my K3 at 38400 baud with N1MM
without any issues thru a com port.

I found a newer HP/Compaq laptop that had a serial
port pretty cheap on ebay.

Julius

Slightly OT, Field Day Logging Pgm

While  I have used N1MM and FQP's programs in the past, our club
(K8DAA), uses this free field day logger.
It doesn't talk to your radio. It does require you to let it know if you
switch bands, hence, it is compatible with any radio out there!

    It's simple and its free.
