Without warning and having made no changes my K3-10, using utility 1.2.16,
MCU 2.78 and DSP 1.98, is now giving me "K3 is not responding". I'm using the USB/SERIAL adapter from Elecraft. The USB ports are working on the computer. Any ideas of what I can check? Thanks. I'd recommend trying an RS-233 port, if at all possible, or can you try
another USB to Serial adapter? I have a catchall "troubleshooting USB to Serial Adapter" section in K3 Utility Help that covers almost everything I've ever heard. USB to serial adapters do fail sometimes, as do USB ports, and not all failing devices announce themselves as inoperative. If you have more than one USB hub on your computer, try a different one. Look to the Windows Device Manager for the COM port assignment as it will very likely be different if you move the KUSB from hub to hub. I have had an off and on problem with a USB to serial dongle, and finally
discovered the following pattern: Using Windows XP, all current windows upgrades maintained. Using the USB dongle purchased from Elecraft. The Elecraft recommended drivers from the mfr. have been installed. K3 is on. K3 is reachable via the USB dongle on COM3 by other programs, N1MM, etc on COM3 ANY firmware update arrives, makes no difference. Start up 1.2.16 K3 utility. Finds K3 right off, no problems. Install firmware no problems. **IF** I terminate the K3 1.2.16 utility and after that power off the K3 I have no problems. COM3 is still around to play with as desired. **IF** I do the recommended K3 power off BEFORE I terminate the K3 1.2.16 utility, this locks up the utility. It cannot be terminated with the "X" button in the upper right of the window. Powering the K3 back on does not restore the utility to operation. The only way to terminate the utility is with Windows Task Manager. Further, regardless of whether K3 is back on COM3 has been rendered unreachable and the only way to restore it to communications is with a reboot. This particular sequence is the only one which creates this lockup. Turning off the K3 with N1MM running does not cause this issue, N1MM complains about lost communications until I turn the K3 back on and it's happy again. This would seem to be an issue with the utility only. Perhaps this has involvement with some of the reported issues? 73, Guy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Saturday, April 11, 2009 11:33 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 is not responding > Without warning and having made no changes my K3-10, using utility 1.2.16, > MCU 2.78 and DSP 1.98, is now giving me "K3 is not responding". This has been corrected in a subsequent version of the K3 Utility. We're
working now toward getting a new K3 Utility version onto the Elecraft web site.
