K3 - key clicks on receive

Lee Trout
Has anyone else noticed the K3 seems very susceptible to received stations with key clicks?  If the station is strong, I can hear the clicks 2 khz away even with the 400 hz filter in line and DSP even narrower.  No help from NR or NB.  No big deal, but I've noted this several times.

Check that you have the menu item "AGC PLS" set to "nor" (the default),
the K3 AGC overreacts to electrical pulses (such as switching on a
light) if that item is set to "OFF". The same might occur with stations
radiating key clicks.

I think Dave gave a very good suggestion.  I do not have a problem with key
clicks from nearby stations and that is one of the great improvements over
my 756 Pro which is very sensitive to things like that. Unless the key click
is already in the actual pass band I don't think you should be bothered by
them.

Lee,

It is entirely possible for a station with bad key clicks to produce
energy for 2 kHz or more either side of the carrier, so the increased
sensitivity of the K3 may allow you to hear those keyclicks as signals
(they really are signals) even though you have the filters tightened up
- it depends on the nature of the other station's keyclicks.
OTOH, it may have something to do with the AGC as others have pointed
out.   You may want to alter the AGC PLS menu entry to see if it makes
any difference.

SSB Net results

Phil and Christina
We held the SSB net this morning (1800Z on 14316 kHz).  There were 13 of us
in total over about 25 minutes.  Although conditions weren't great, from the
west coast I could hear everyone, although I needed a fill on one station.
I was using a K3 driving a Heath SB-200 (about 600W) to a 2 element quad at
75' pointed east.  Here is a list of the participants:

Station Name QTH Rig S/N

AE5JD Bart TX K3 2106
N0EHQ Ed IA K3 242
W2RWA Dick NY IC7700 (waiting for a K3)
N1LQ David MA K3 371
AB2TC Ken NY K3 82
K9SSB Dick WI IC720A
W5GGO Sid TX IC746Pro
W7QHD Kurt AZ K2/100
KC0VTO Greg IA R599/T599 (Kenwood)
WK3N Scotty PA waiting for his K3
WB0SQZ John MO IC7700
N4HH Don GA K3 83
NS7P Phil OR K3 1826

Let us know if any of the information is incorrect.  Also, would the fellow
who recently sent a message with photos of the mods he has done to his K3
please resend them to me.  I seem to have inadvertently deleted them.
Thanks to everybody.

73,

Phil, NS7P
