K3 mush example?

Don Putnick-2
Hi all,

As a mere mortal and a relatively new K3 owner, I would find it really eductational if someone could post an audio clip of what's being discussed.

Thanks and 73,
Don NA6Z

Better still -- how about a comparison of audio clips between the K3 and a
competing transceiver that is seemingly unaffected by the problem?  If not
from this past 160m contest, then perhaps from the forthcoming Stew Perry or
CQ 160m contests.

David Gilbert

I don't think 160m is the place to look for the problem.  The upcoming
10m contest would be a much better choice.

I wonder if the blurring or mush problem is as severe when using Diversity
Reception which is more likely on TB than on the HF bands where the great
directivity of the Yagi seems to null the benefits of diversity reception.
So the Stew Perry may not be such a good test to use.

This is a most interesting thread and I am so impressed by Eric and Wayne.
My K3 was a wise purchase even to allow my enjoying such conversations.   I
also find blurring with mid level signals on occasion and always use the
attenuator in contests.   Perhaps if it is mid-level signals switching out
ATT would help but no one has time for this in a contest.

Re: K3 mush example?

Doug Turnbull
Is the blurring problem less severe when using a 300 Hz tone which is my
favourite?   At 300Hz the differences in audio frequency seem to be more
noticeable.  This is personal but I find the tone less harsh and in my case
the RX equalization is set to favour a narrow band of frequencies around 300
Hz.   When this problem occurs for me I wait for the pile up to die down and
one or two stations to come back or persist.   Yes this costs but then I am
in the mid-level of contesters and am pretty happy but I am learning.  In EI
we can actually get pileups in contests so life is good.  Thanks to all.
