Re: K3 on Order

Mike Reublin
  Welcome to the family.
I'm using an Astron RS-35M, it's what I had. I found I had to set the output to 13.8V
for the K3 to operate correctly.

Hey, congratulations, Chris.  I know you will enjoy the rig.  I use an
Astron RS-50M with mine, but that's extreme overkill.  I just had it on
hand.  One of the Elecraft co-owners (memory doesn't tell me which) uses the
Samlex 1223 I believe.  I've looked at the 30 amp version of that, and the
price is tempting, for sure, and I like the light weight instead of this 30
lb monster I have, hi.

I bought an MFJ 4125P a few days before I received my K3 so I would have
something that would work and would be easily portable and with the
intention of buying a power supply for non-portable use later, which I
haven't done yet.  The MFJ 4125P is somewhat, but not terribly noisy.
In my case, significant hearing damage probably but I also place it
behind a monitor.

Hi Chris,

Hope you enjoy your K3.

One thought: If you operate any CW or narrowband data at all, I think
you'll want at least one narrow filter (500 or 400 Hz). It'll make a
huge difference in crowded band conditions. If you're strictly into
voice modes, you can do without.

Yup ......  I'd get something around 13.8V - 30A surge   :p

All kidding aside, pick the one you like.  Almost all are good.  Check out
the August 2009 issue of QST and Best of luck with your new K3 !!

I have used a bunch of different supplies, all worked well. Use an Alinco
switching 35 amp supply for portable work, an Astron 20 amp up at the cabin
and a Lambda arc welder supply :) for home use

I got the Samlex 1235M, and have been very happy wioth it (the 35 amps
gives more than adequate headroom for the K3, without being silly).  The
one drawback is the rather loud fan which comes on after heavy
transmitting, but AD5X has a modification (and an excellent review of
the PS) on his web site, which lets the fan run slowly almost all the
time, and the top speed only rarely.

Astron RS-35M

Linear (no noise) with meter. Last 12V supply you will
need.  Build an Anderson supply cable.  Use a "Red-Dee 2
Connect"  8 way Anderson distribution
block

http://www.reddee2.com/

Much less expensive than the others and they work well.

You may also want to look at the solid-state PS from http://Power-werx.com
model=SS-30.
I picked up one in a raffle and it powers the K3 just fine with a very
small footprint, two power poles in the front and a pair of terminals in
the back.
I have not tried to use it to float charge a battery and the Mfg. was not
clear if it would work in this application.
It has a fan that makes some noise.

Re: K3 on Order

Joe Subich, W4TV-4
In reply to this post by Eugene Balinski

While I can't disagree with the recommendation for a linear
supply (I have an Astron RS-35A for each K3), I recommend
avoiding the PowerPole distribution blocks and would power
station accessories - particularly any accessory that touches
the audio - in the shack from a SEPARATE supply.

Sharing a single power supply between the transmitter and
accessories is a very good way to create "RFI" (even with
a dummy load) due to the "pin 1" problem in nearly every
amateur rig ever built.

Both K9YC and W8JI have documented various manifestations of
this problem - common mode RFI, "ground loops," "hum loops,"
and current modulation of external audio sources.  For many
years, Kenwood manuals have specifically cautioned against
using the same power supply for their transceivers and "data
TNCs" even though their explanation ("conducted noise from
the TNC") is not correct.  For a better understanding of
these issues I recommend the web sites of K9YC and W8JI.

  K9YC: http://www.audiosystemsgroup.com/RFIHamNCCC.pdf
  W8JI: http://www.w8ji.com/cables_and_wiring.htm

I completely agree with Joe, but I'm guilty of using a common supply for the
K3 and switching-type accessories.

However, if a common supply is used with a distribution block, consider
connecting the K3 direct to the power supply terminals and not a port on the
distribution block.  Then, if a power distribution block is used, route
accessories from the power supply terminals to the block, especially if one
is insistent on running audio accessories from the +12V bus.

The W2IHY products can be powered by +12V and seem to be very popular.  When
using  a W2IHY device, it would be better to use the supplied wall-wart than
be tempted to use a common +12V power bus.  If I was designing a similar
device, I would rather design it for use with an AC wall transformer (AC
in/out), then rectify and filter inside the audio device.  The added benefit
is that bi-polar supply rails can be easily created with an AC input.

Paul, W9AC.

Re: K3 on Order

Brett Howard
The main reason why most devices take DC in rather than bringing in
direct AC is because they can pass all the safety work on to the brick
manufacturer and it saves them a lot of money in the regulatory end.

Re: K3 on Order

I did not know about the Power-werx SS-30DV. I will look into this one as well.I
would very much like a switching supply. Because I don't have a normal Ham
shack. I use my home office as the radio room with not much room for radio's.

My concern for any Switching supply is the RFI noice that the radio will pick up
from the power supply. Looking at the SEC 1235m, I was reading that it has a
build in RFI filter. Plus I like the AD5X mod to slow down the fan. And the
Alinco DM-340 MVT has a knob to change the freq. of the noise that the radio is
picking up. I think that the DM-340 MVT is a bit over kill. I am only looking
for a PS that will power the radio only.

You may also want to look at the solid-state PS from http://Power-werx.com
model=SS-30.
I picked up one in a raffle and it powers the K3 just fine with a very
small footprint, two power poles in the front and a pair of terminals in
the back.
I have not tried to use it to float charge a battery and the Mfg. was not
clear if it would work in this application.
It has a fan that makes some noise.

Chris,

You say, not much room - how about a linear supply on the floor under
the desk?  It does not take up much space there. None of my power
supplies occupy desk space.

Any power supply that has a VFO knob built in means they either don't know
how to get harmonics down to the proper level or don't want to spend a few
bucks on components, so they took the cheap way out.

I have several switching supplies and can't hear any of them anywhere unless
I run an antenna right in the room.

I bought a PowerWerx SS-30 at Dayton this year and used it at Field Day. It powered my K3 for the entire 24 hours without any problem. No RF noise detected. The fan noise is noticeable but not with headphones. Several people commented on it's small size. Now I use it in the shack as my main power supply since it takes up so little space on the desk.

I have an Alinco supply and have never found any birdies which could
be changed by that knob, so I feel that it is pretty clean.  After
fighting some of the birds I did have for years, I switched from a
CRT to a LCD monitor and nearly all the birds disappeared.

Re: K3 on Order

Cookie
Chris, I have two JetStream switching supplies that I have used for four years.
I have not been able to attribute any spurious receiver responses to the supply
in either my TS-850 or my Elecraft K3.  I have a few continuous carriers that
seem to be spurious on 10 meters and 6 meters, but they are very weak, less than
S1 and I have never lost a contact that I blame these signals.  I read a lot of
comments about the power supply generated artifacts, but I have not seen any
that properly documented a serious problem with any commerically offered
supply.  One of my JetStreams does have some fan noise that I can hear when my
air conditioner is not running and my amplifier is turned off.  I would
categorically say that there is a lot more worry about switching supplies than
the actual problems warrent.  I am sure that there are many who will not be
convinced, but I have worked over 200 countries per year for the last four years
while using switching supplies and I have an Astron analog supply sitting on the
shelf that I don't use as well as a Pyramid analog supply that needs repair in
the closet.
