Dear Gary:
I built a KX1, XV-144, K3, K2, and K1 in that order. Building the K2 was a lot like building my HW-101 back in the day...a big enough project that it takes a number of days to build it (my K2 is a fully-optioned QRP model). The thrill on first power-up is tremendous!
I think the K2 is the most involved one to build, though the XV-144 is a nice challenge as well. The K3 is the easiest, obviously, and the K1 is the easiest component-level kit. I built my K1 while recovering from gall bladder surgery and looped on massive doses of Vicodin--that's how easy it is. By some miracle it works great. I didn't want the experience to stop, so after building the 2-band model I built a 4-band filter board and added all the options. Now I'm looking at an XV-432 kit that I'll start on in the next day or two. WOOHOO! Then the sell-off continues to pay for the Elecraft Kool Aid. Wanna buy a '71 Karmann Ghia?

After seeing a recent post about building a K2, I'm wondering how many K3
owners have actually built a K2? It would seem that some kind of right of
passage should be given to those people that have built a K2 or even a K1,
before purchasing a K3. Maybe a sticker that they can put on their K3 or a
special certificate to hang on the wall? Of course, I'm excluding those that
can't build because, of physical dissability. I'm just thinking of all the
fun that they missed building a K2 and perhaps they would appreciate the K3
even more. Just trying to stir the pot. ;-)
