K3 pan-adapter question

Dave-Boat Guy
Hi,
I was looking at the Clifton Laboratories (Jack
Smith)website and comparing his panoramic adapter to
TelepostInc (Larry Phipps) LP-PAN.

It seems to me that the Clifton Laboratories adapter
is a sophisticated spectrum analyzer with a lot of
well developed software and requisite electronics.
>From what I can tell, the LP-PAN is an integration
effort of a basic SoftRock module, isolation
amplifier, and isolation transformers...nothing too
sophisticated and no software.

I am curious if the mentioned prices for the LP-PAN
are accurate ($300-$500).  That puts it in the same
price range as a more sophisticated piece of hardware
(and SW), the Clifton Laboratories spectrum monitor.
With the cost of parts for a SoftRock module and an
isolation amplifier and some transformers and perhaps
some LDO regulators, I can't see how there is more
than $15-$25 worth of parts, another $10-$20 for a
board, and perhaps $20 for a chassis.  From my school
of thought, sophisticated electronics (with
software/firmware) normally is priced from 2.4 to 3X
material costs, so the LP-PAN anticipated cost seems
really high...unless I'm missing something.  I'm just
trying to figure out the cost of a K3 ala panoramic
display station.

Thanks

Dave

Re: K3 pan-adapter question

Jack Smith-6
Dave:

I'll leave it to Larry to announce his pricing strategy when he is
ready. Until then, I would  take the $300-$500 "estimate" as completely
uninformed speculation for the reasons you well articulate.

Nice advertisement.

As far as I know Larry hasn't released the pricing for the LP-PAN and
the numbers you quote were just "thinking out loud" by Bill, W4ZV.

It's also not true that there is "no software" for the LP-PAN. PowerSDR
runs the Flex5K and VE3NA's "Rocky" is a very capable piece of software
as well.

In reply to this post by Dave-Boat Guy
I had an email from Larry early on that  suggested a price of around $150.
But, that was very tentative and I would  not hold him to it.  It does seem
much more  realistic.

Sorry for not responding to this earlier, but I receive digests, so
threads can go awhile before I see them. I don't think this is the forum
for this discussion, therefore I have launched an LP-PAN User Group at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LP-PAN/.  I will address some of the
questions raised today on the Elecraft reflector later tonight on my
user group.

The group is open to all interested parties.

VK6DX, slighlty OT, but not really...

Tom-5
In reply to this post by Dave-Boat Guy
As I sit here with my wire antenna trying to work one of the K3's on
Ducie Island, my mind, once again wondered.

God Bless the Internet, and Google. Have a look at where the VK6 folks
are living:

If you look close, you can see the K3's ;)

On a sunny afternoon,

Perhaps your difficulty lies in the area of either wrong geography or
wrong station.
I believe VK6 would be somewhere in Australia...

The folks on Ducie Island are actually using the callsign VP6DX.

I'm in their log... :-) ;-)

RE: VK6DX, slighlty OT, but not really...

Jim Sheldon
http://ducie2008.dl1mgb.com/  is the official website of the dxpedition.
There you will find the on-line log, all sorts of news about what's
happening, pictures etc. and if you click on "Site Map" you will see an
aerial photo of Ducie with all the antenna site/information superimposed.
Very impressive setup.

7 Active stations, all K3's with ACOM amplifiers and those guys sure seem to
know how to get the most out of the K3's receiver!  They hear EVERYTHING!

Hi, VK6 is Western Australia.

On 17/02/2008 11:09 AM, the old scribe known as Jim Sheldon was able to
impart this pearl of wisdom:

Ducie is a very beautiful and comfortable place.  The lagoon is very
clear, so much so I have some photos of the marine life, taken from
above the surface that look a lot like underwater photographs.

And the BRAVEHEART crew is VERY supportive, so even the lack of water
on the island is not a problem.  Even the hermit crabs are no
problem.
