K3 s/n 1169 21MHz band distortion

Jack Colson
I have noticed whenever I used the transciever on 21MHz (rare since band
conditons are so poor) a distortion of received signals.  I listened to
the transmitted signal using on other receiver(s) and it is quite
noticeable.  Especially when comparing the purity of the CW note on 14
and 28 MHz.

The recieved signal distortion is difficult to describe.  The amount of
distortion varies from signal to signal.  And it does not seem to be a
function of received signal strength.

I switched power supplies, no change.  Switched from using an external
antenna to a dummy load and no change in the sound of the transmitted
signal purity.

I think the best illustration of this would be for me to call a service
technician and let them listen to it.  That would at least let them hear
what I am experiencing.

Thank you for your assistance.

Jack Colson, W3TMZ

Hi Jack,

Noise blanker settings can be remembered per-band, and very aggressive
NB settings can cause distortion.  Is it possible you have set the NB
levels for the 21 MHz band to very aggressive settings (e.g. dsp t3-7
and/or IF wid7)?  Press and hold the NB button when on the 21 MHz band
to see what settings you have and compare them to the settings on
other bands.  Of course, turning the NB off for the 21 MHz band could
tell you right away whether that's the problem or not.

Just a thought.
